I have reposted the relevant parts of it, you missed it because it was at end of last page, this update is as close to all original conditions and rules.
Victory conditions have not been discussed either, so we will use the 2 player victory condition common to most stars games.
As a side note: in a medium universe (which we are not playing) the WM and HE are VERY powerful.

I seem to get valid race files which play that game fine - but are corrupt on next opening.
It almost doesn't matter what I do, I tend to drift back and forth in the wizard, then save, but it happens when I recreate a race from notes as well (I.e. move through the wizard exactly once)
I've always been saving to a virtual network drive, or a *nix box though.
Out of interest when DO you rename a race? At the beginning of the process?

Never, if possible.
You name them once then never touch it again if at all possible.
1) Before sending a race file to the host, open it to check wether it is corrupted or not. If it's ok send it without any changes.
2) In my experience the race file gets corrupted when editing/changing the race name after you have saved it the first time... and the new name is shorter or longer by more than 1 letter.
3) It is possible to rename the race afterwards. Here the workaround: You can change upto as many letters as in the old name rightaway. Additional letters you need to add/subtract by 1 letter (you can change one letter for the singular and plural name at the same time). Save it. Close. Reopen. Add/subtract the next letter. And so on.
When finished, go back to 1)

No files corrupted, still waiting on Maidens, 2 race files were sent back for minor correction.
I would strongly recommend against factoryless races in slow tech games.
There is still some time.

Exactly the piece of advice I'd give (if asked), but upgraded to:
"I would strongly recommend against factoryless races in any game in a large or huge galaxy, where there's more than 30 planets per player."
This comes from personal experience.
Slow tech only makes the -f race's life more miserable, as it largely nullifies one of its greatest advantages.
