Ron,

I think it might be good for you to set up a Paypal (or something like that) account to accept donations from people happy with AH and all that you have provided over the years.

Before you get ruffled... I am not saying you should do this to collect cash for yourself. I know many cases where people who really enjoy a hobby lose interest when they start getting paid.

Instead you could collect money to buy AH it's very own server. You could let money collect in the account until you have enough to buy the server. Maybe even let people see how much money has gathered there.

Maybe I am wrong, but I imagine that you would like to see AH have a server all to itself. And I think this would be a nice way for people to say thank you for all the great work you have done.

He does have paypal on the autohost site. To my knowledge 4 people have contributed to date.

If you can't trust me, who can't you trust?

That is correct. 4 people have contributed since Stars! AutoHost went public in May, 1997. I've received over 80 postcards from all over the world.

The PayPal link is found on http://library.southern.edu/stars/postcards.htm

I had not seen Ron's response yet, so I went searching for the Paypal link. It took me a while to find it. Sad

Nice to know that I was not the first to think of it, and that a link is already there.

I think it should be easier to find.

See the thread at http://library.southern.edu/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th= 107&start=0&rid=1&S=d09a3c96bfc957604b3496b46b68 11cd

and read my reply there when this topic came up back in December, 2002.

To clarify/summarize:

  • I have never asked for money donations.
  • The only thing I've suggested is for player/hosts to send me postcards (with a message on it) if they have enjoyed using Stars! AutoHost.
  • As I've mentioned before, to date, 4 people have sent me money donations, and yet requested to be kept anonymous.
  • Any donation will be cheerfully accepted Very Happy
  • Donors do not receive special privileges (they may later, it depends. Naturally donors requesting anonymity cannot receive special privileges)
  • AutoHost is currently co-hosted on our work web-server (since I'm the admin). A close friend has already setup a box elsewhere to help with hosting or migrating AH, but I've been too lazy to take advantage of it as yet.
  • Currently, I don't have to pay out any money to run Stars! AutoHost. If that changes in the future, I may *have* to ask for donations.
  • Because of the international aspect of Stars! and since the use of Stars! AutoHost has always been free, I believe it would be very difficult to request donations or charge for playing/hosting.
