Is this the only place on the net that I can find new games to join? I would like to have several on the go at the same time but that doesn't appear to be possible here.

Or could I host games of my own in which I'm a player?

I don't think there are other places on the net. Some might point you to the irc room, but you won't find any games there... Just some nice people to talk with.

I'm sure Neil, altruist or someone else will be hosting their games for 2012 very soon... But don't get involved in more than three games. You'll have a tough time handling them post 2450/60.

Hello,

First off, this should be moved to the Bar.

I'm currently in 5 games on AutoHost, but I'm retired and have the time. The oldest game is in it's 9th month and looks like it will last at least a year before it's over. If your trying to start a bunch of games all at the same time I think that would be asking for trouble. I try and spread the starts of games at least a month apart.

I know you didn't ask but here's my basic rules for multiple games.

1. make sure you have at least 3 hours to spend on the game per turn. If you have allies and are testbedding battles then you will need even more time per turn. Yesterday I had 25 incoming e-mails and one online chat about Stars, and that's on a slow Sunday.

2. After 2450 the games normally slow down to 3 turns per week, so you would think you have more time per turn, but I've found that the games gen in the same window of time. As I write this I'm going to be having 3 games gen in a 3 hour window, two are due back in 48 hours and the other 72. So that's one day per turn, NOT! as the other two games need attention also and each turn can take a lot longer.

3. Keep good notes, somethings it's 3 days from the time I finish one turn and see the next.

Little Eddie

Edit: I do also have a real live, wife, dog, house etc, and play two to three rounds of golf each week. I just really don't like TV or reading.

Quite true... One reason I've given up on playing multiple games is the effort it takes to get into the mind frame reqd for each game.
Even duels and blitz take an initial five minutes to get back on track...
Much easier to finish them in one go or play only one game at a time, perhaps with faster gen windows though xd.

Both are possible - I am currently in 2 games at the moment but as Nmid says it can get confusing for a number of reasons. Firstly, the game rules can differ - for example you may be allowed to only ally with one person and everyone else must be set to Enemy but in another game you can work with anyone. You will also be sending e-mails to allies and it helps if you can remember who is your ally in which game. I have more than once nearly sent an e-mail message to someone about a game they are not even playing in!

You can also host a game you are playing in and this is not unusual. In this case a third party will normally check the race files to ensure they comply with the rules - e.g. JOATs must take NAS etc., if that has been what is agreed. When you post the mnessage advertising the game just ask for a non-playing volunteer to check race files. You can see examples of this in the New Games section - e.g. Stone Age Slaughter 6 where you will see how the original idea builds up into a game.

However, I would recommend you play in a few games before hosting one as it will give you the experience of what is normal - for example, slowing down the game to perhaps 3 turns per week after the first 30, 40 or 50 years and also what to do when someone asks for a delay. There is a body of conventions which players have come to expect but generally it is all very democratic - but from time to time the host will have to make a decision.

There are (or were) some other sites for new game announcements if you are comfortable with Polish, German, or Russian. I will edit with links in ~12 hours.
