I think somebody might have won.
That is Knife Fight 2.

Are you referring to the first Knife Fight, or the second? I had to drop out from the first fight, but I heard my replacement managed to keep himself in the game... which I consider a miracle as the race I chose was an AR.

BlueTurbit took over the Ethereals (an experimental AR race) in the first game. He commented that it was an interesting design and that he enjoyed playing around with it. He finished KF1 in 5th place (but still kicking) when slimdrag00n was declared victor.

Blue died in the middle of KF2, and his WMs the AMPM were taken over by Bystander.

Thanks a lot for the input - the Ethereal race was my first AR design that I managed to breed into a monster, and I was mighty curious how Blue, being IIRC the resident AR expert, found this race, its design and playability.
Then, I guess I'd be better off asking him personally Smile

When I took over the race in 2413, I started maintaining a text log. Didn't continue for too long though.
The race was a JOAT with mines costing 15 resources. Didn't quite understand the logic of the race... but the crippling blow was that the greens/breeders I did find were all germ poor.

----------------------------------------------------------

Came in @ 2413, HW's bloated at 55%+ cap, 1 year away from Privateer tech. He's been autobuilding mines but no factories. Guess he was micro-managing that bit. The 3 year turn skipping wasn't good for me.

The race is a good HG JOAT race with broad habs, but in the game, I seem to have gotten badly placed greens.. and even those are low on minerals.. esp germ.
2 planet colonisation missions were lost.
Focussing on con4 this turn and will go for weap6 next turn (95% R&D). Not going for FFs but just enough to safeguard and defend myself and perhaps get some outposts in.

Babylon? Engineer? Player3(SD, HW-Eridanus)
Traders? Terrans (IS?,HW-Twelth Man) AM-PM (Guess HW-Crabby)
Artifacts? Donuts ( ,HW-Uqbar) Lozben (me, HW-Hollywood)

Player 3 (SD, HW-Eridanus)
Terran (IS, HW-Twelth Man)
Donuts ( ,HW-Uqbar)

2418
Well, over the past 5 years realised this race isn't going to go far.
Added to the low mineral concentrations for the closeby greens, this race is burdened by the cost of it's mines being 15 resources.

I've decided to use it's high GR as much as possible and make life difficult for my neighbours... Instead of this race being a dead race, it would be fun to push back and make it go down like a wounded tiger Smile

I've popdropped a terran outpost about 150 LY from my HW (120ly from his). Sent 850kt pop with some minerals.. I expected to have about 350kt at the end of the fight, but had only 3kt at the end of the fight. Guess he's IS.
Sending in some reinforcements to build up a small dock to keep it, but it's just so that he doesn't get the planet.
The 38%(64%) is nice, but the sub-10 MCs for bor and germ don't make it a high priority for me.
I see he has 5 destroyers 90 lys away, but leaving 2 empty privateers in case I need to make a fast evac next year. If I can hold it for 2-3 years, it will be mine for another 10 years easily, causing him major headaches and securing my border with him.

Also going to hit the AMs/PMs on the tri-green cluster to my north-east. (220lys from my HW). I don't see his HW anywhere closeby, so going to hit him hard. He does have a destroyer in orbit. Seen that particular design the past 4-5 years, so it's an old design. Not sure what specifically but I'm counting on my shielded destoryer with yaks to carry the day. It's a gamble that will decide the future of 1150kt pop as well as the northern front.
If I can secure that front, my northern front will be secure against AMs-PMs, Terrans, Player 3 (SD, HW-Eridanus) and traders (small outpost near the terran-my border).

Ignoring the Donuts as they don't have the same habs as mine. Located his HW @ Uqbar (300ly from my HW). He's using MFs.. coming close to my HW to Pin prick (100lys) but not stopping him.
Yellow planet for me and hoping he'll not be aggressive against a player who has no greens for him and thus go defensive on his eastern front and push aggressively on his northern and western front. Leaves me to focus on the 2-3 neighbours on my north.
Ofcourse, he might go hammer-and-tongs against me, but we'll have a 3 year warning due to my scouts in the region. Wait and watch approach adopted for him.
Hmmm... might rethink that, as it opens up 10 planets to him. Tough to take care of that, but if he's putting in 1400kt pop, that means it's a fat breeder for him. Might do something about it. Bombers or pop-dropper??
---------------------------------------------------

After 2420, pretty much went on autopilot, mass building colloidal CCs and a few jihad DDs + enough chaff. The aim was to have gatable ships ready to blunt atleast one attack by an enemy.

Donuts saw the build up and didn't push north, but then he dropped.

The traders (a SS race, using packets aggressively pushed against the terrans and other races north of me) but didn't attack me much.
It was when I shot down a LF full of pop did they take out my northern most planets.

It was around this time that terrans dropped as well and the rest of us all allied in an attempt to draw out the game.. but that didn't affect the end-game much.

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

Nice log. One thing that's not quite clear - this race had no minerals and not much resources. How did you manage to go from c3 and w5 max in 2413 to mass building CC's and jihads in 2420?

played the race like a -f to get the relevant tech.
Made factories from the germ mined at the HW and kept putting in remaining resources into mines.
On the other planets, focussed primarily on factories using HW germ and then built a couple of mines for ship building.

I had 30-50 odd years till 2475 to build the 180 odd beam cruisers, 15 odd jihad CCs.

Additional game plan was to get elec10 for the jammers so that my starbases would be more protected against jihads along with the limited chaff I would have... but that took more time than I had.

The exact race settings were
19% GR, broad habs, 1/3.
Factories> 13/10/11/-1
Mines > 12/15/11
(Even if it was 10/5/10, the race would be better off, for the same wizard points!!)
Weapons cheap, Con normal, prop normal, rest exp

2440 had 3500 resources.
2450 had 7000 resources.
End tech was 7/12/7/9/10/4.
2475 has 4200, but HW mines bombed out.

From which we can perhaps safely conclude that the -m race does not work. Unless anyones knows of a successful race with similar mine settings?

That's what that kind of race has always seemed to me. The trick lies in what you buy with the expensive mines points. And of course the only way forward would be to generate enough Resources to be able to build all the mines. Rolling Eyes

Can be done with a JoaT, but it's a big gamble and not for the faint of heart. Quite likely not for crowded galaxies either. Whip
