Things have recently kicked into high gear at the Stars! Nova project with a couple of new and very active developers getting involved. Henning and Bernado have joined the team and re-inspired some of the existing developers to add further contributions. Although we still have a lot of work to do to get to version 0.5, we hope to get a minor release out as soon as some high priority bugs get squashed.

Here is a summary of the work that has been going on since my last update:

A lot of general code clean up and improvements to the underlying code architecture.

New Game
Cool Starting star base and ships added.
- Fixed a runtime exception which occurred when starting a new game.

Race Designer
Cool Immunities introduced, but at a constant 841 point cost.
- Research costs modifier now properly increase or decrease advantage points.
- Changing the colonist growth rate now changes the point cost.
- Advantage points are no longer affected by a previously loaded race.

Console
- Research is now processed server side to prevent client exploits.
- Race trait processing moved server side.
- Fixed a crash if no stars have allocated research resources.
- Made some adjustments to the turn order to be closer to the Stars! turn order for production, pop-growth, mining, resource production.
- Fixed an issue where scrapping a ship overwrote the star's resources instead of adding to them.
- Updated message and planetary scanners after researching new one.
- Fixed an issue which caused an upgraded space station to disappear after one turn.
- Colonisers now stay scrapped rather than reappearing after one turn.
- Fixed an issue that caused an error message when more than one race tried to open its turn on the same computer (eg AI and Human).
- Fixed an issue that caused a planet taken by invasion not to change owner.

GUI
Cool Added the ability to use different ship icons for ship designs.
Cool Fixed various issues that caused the StarMap to flicker and/or leak memory, most noticeable under Linux/Mono.
Cool Added the option of toggling the StarMap background, and a toggling a visible rectangle box marking the Universe borders.
Cool Stars! gravity values are now used.
Cool Added a planet population tooltip (on mouse down) which gives additional details.
- StarMap now properly shows waypoints after adding them. Way-point list also updates on the fly for new waypoints added.
- Stars can now be made to contribute only leftover resources to research via the production dialog.
- PlanetDetail updates dynamically for research budget changes.
- Planets now contribute leftover resources to research.
- Fixed StarMap background to be properly aligned and match game universe size.
- Created a new ResourcesOnHandDisplay control which extends ResourceDisplay, for specifically showing planetary resources with extended information.
- Corrected research allocation written to orders file.
- Resources on hand now matches resources available in research pane.
- Fixed an issue which cause the time to complete research to become garbage when no resources were assigned.
- Ships can now be deleted without crashing the program.
- Fixed an issue that would cause the GUI to lock up when adding large build orders when limited resources were available.
- Added a dashed line at 100% fuel on engine fuel graph.
- Fixed an issue that caused the Nova GUI to crash when the first game message was posted with a null Type.
- Planet population is now updated when loading colonists.

Component Editor
- Corrected fuel usage for Trans-Galactic drive.

Tools
- Removed GameFileInflator project as the gzip decompression functionality is available in many free applications (7-zip, gzip, etc.).

Have fun.

Is there any way to help you?

My programming skills arent very good. But maybe you need People to do other Tasks. I think there are many more People here that would like to help you.

I think there are many small Tasks to do. But i never made a Game so i dont know.

Greetings all!

I'll grab this opportunity to introduce myself, one of the new devs to the project. I'm just a sucky Stars player who has never played in autohost, but that has loved the game ever since I learned from it in a very very old shareware magazine Smile

I'll also take the liberty of answering for dan, Azrael; we can always use more hands. I think being a great programmer is not a requierement to help, but if coding is not your thing we can always use more bug hunters. Anyone can download the current SVN source and test it for bugs we have missed or features that are most pressing to add.
You would need a SVN client like TortoiseSVN and a way to compile the solution, which right now would be a C# IDE. There are free ones like VisualStudio Express (2008 matches our current toolset I think) or SharpDevelop (which I personally recommend!).

Also I was meaning to ask here in autohost before: The Race Designer costs are something we could REALLY use help with. We have some pretty good preliminary information from source files dan dug up from other race designer attempts and research Henning did, but the relationship between immunities (hab ranges too?), growth % and TT is fairly complex. If anyone here has concrete information on the formulas to share with us, it would go a long long way into finishing the Race Designer Very Happy

Cheers!

If you people want any help in the audio/music department, I can help.
Perhaps some custom made sounds or original music for the game.
Or perhaps some videos with audio. Tutorial or demo videos?
Possibly these may be enhancements down the road a ways?

I had not given sound much thought yet. It would be great at this stage to have a demo video we could put on YouTube. Something short and catchy that followed the game through the 4X themes of explore, expand, exploit and exterminate! You could set that to some theme music and that could then be used as the default mood music for the game.

For down the road, you could gather some sound effects for in game. The obvious ones are battle sound effects but most games these days include audio with button presses and other in-game events. Perhaps certain sounds could be associated with particular message types? All of that would take some programming effort to put in game so you will have to be patient as going from content to content in game can take a while. But as you will soon see with the new ship designs it is well worth while!

For those of you who are cringing at the idea of all this "extra noise", of course we will include the option to turn music and/or sound effects off. One of the great things about Stars! is you can play it without waking the baby.

Have fun.

For those of you wishing to support the Stars! Nova project here is what you can do:

The easiest (and one of the best) ways to support the project is by posting encouragement for the project on the Stars! Nova open discussion forum. You would be amazed by the spike in developer activity this generates as every developer is automatically emailed your message. Please no more than one message per day though or we will spend all our time answering them Shocked

If you have more time, and have not done so already, downloading the latest release, playing it and then submitting any bugs or suggestions helps us in a few ways. Firstly it bumps up our download count and project activity making the project more attractive to potential developers. Secondly it helps us when you do the testing as we do not have to spend as much time finding the bugs. Again it also acts as encouragement which tends to increase the amount of time devs put into the project.

If the latest release is not enough, and you are game to try compiling (not that hard really), you can download the latest source code from subversion. There is more information on how to do that in our developer primer here. Again you can help by playing Stars! Nova and submitting bug reports. The more detailed and specific the bug report the more useful it is to us. Confused

If you know some programming and want to be a developer you can follow the full details in the developer primer.

If you are not a programmer but still want to do more then we need a few people with special skills. We need a PR rep, a project manager, a forum administrator and a documentation/wiki writer. One person could fill more than one of these rolls. If any of these sound like you then post here or in the Stars! Nova open discussion forum.

Have fun.

I downloaded Nova yesterday and took a look at it, and I noticed you could use a little help in the form of spell checking. Among other things I noticed that the Stealth Bomber hull is restricted to races with the "Supper Stealth" PRT Laughing

I could help there, but the question is whether I should just send you a list of corrections, or whether I should download the source code and make the changes in the relevant files. That would of course also depend on what format the relevant source code files are in.

Thanks for pointing it out, I corrected it and a "No Ram Scoop Eengines" typo that was next to it.

You can always file a bug about it on our tracker to notify us of any mistakes. The source files are C#, but to commit changes you would need dev. access (which you can get if you are interested in contributing to the code, just follow the Developer Primer that Dan linked a few posts up).

If you list them here or in the nova forum they could get lost/missed occasionally. If you put them in the bug tracker they won't get lost but may not be fixed right away. If you fix them yourself you have to keep a copy of the latest source and do your own commits. I think doing it yourself would be the best contribution, but the other options would still be helpful if you do not want to dig around in code.

If you want to make the changes yourself in the code, follow the steps in the developer primer (link above). As you are only doing spell checks I will give you subversion access without a work sample. You also do not need to subscribe to all of the development forums if you do not want the extra noise.

Have fun.

I've written a version of the race points calculator in Java and added comments to the best of my ability to understand them. Calculating the points for the hab ranges is insanely obtuse.

It's in Java, so you can convert it to C# by doing a find/replace on 'get' and 'set' and replacing them with ''. Smile Stupid Java and its getters and setters!

It also includes the fascinating bit about penalizing NAS for some PRTs (including JoaT) that the original code included but the Freestars team seems to have dropped. Confused

Wow, this is so great to hear that you guys are working this up.

I'm definitely not a coder but I can at least read code and usually understand it, so I'll try to cut back on one of my time sinks and grab the dev primer and see what I can check and test and otherwise keep the devs busy and enthusiastic.

Yup there is Smile More ship sets, alternate component icons, station pics etc. Even concept sketches if you're not that good with a 3D program is pure gold.

Also, if someone can suggest a nice 3d modeling program kinda like 3D studio max since I seem t have misplaced my old copy that would also help Razz

ps. 'm not sure who else is working on the gfx but if someone wants to help on that side drop me a line! Some interaction on that side also spurs me on to do more Wink

You could try Blender, as it is free. However it is a very different interface from 3D studio. Also I have a copy of GMax, which is an old version of 3D studio that was released as a free 'demo' version of 3DS. Email me if you want that and I will see about getting it to you.

Hmm I had a look at google sketchup but that's not quite what I want and can't see doing what I want in it. I'm downloading gmax 1.2 and will have a look at if that will work thanks Smile I think I looked at blender once but I'll have a look at that again.

EDIT: Well I looked at Gmax and Blender.

Gmax might work if i can impor tmy old models. I really hope I can import my old models Smile

Blender looks awesome but that'll take me months to learn a new system, and I had a friend teaching me 3ds max when I started :/

Let me know if you need a hand (ex)porting your models to more modern formats. I used to be good at that kind of datamorphing. Teleport

While you're at it, perhaps it would be interesting to create more detailed "destruction sequences" for all these ships, with all kinds of bits flying apart or melting down before the classic explosions take over. Head Explode

"slightly damaged" and "badly damaged" looks would also be nice, unless those can be better portrayed by overlaying some independent "damaged" layers...

Last but not least, what about a "firefly/serenity" shipset? Pirate

Hmmm interesting thought. I know my old 3ds max had a pretty cool explosion thingy that you just slap onto a model. will look for it in Gmax but I doubt it's there. Otherwise I'm not sure how much work it would be to do damage on each separate model/render.
