Those special gates seem unnecessary, and until ARM BBs, useless. I might be wrong though, it has happened twice before.

Depends of which one you are referring to.

The any/any gate is certainly there only for show. I guess they might get handy in very, very, very late game and on huge universe... But otherwise, any/300 and any/800 gates do the trick very well for IT players since you never lose ships to overgating and very, very rarely to over distance gating. This is actually a huge advantage on other races who have to plan to keep their ships lightweight or have to crawl their ships around unless they already plan to lose a certain percentage to the void while you simply forget about the size of your ships and gate away.

On most maps I played, you can use any/800 and literally send your ship from a corner of the map to the next without destroying it. Might be pretty damaged depending of distance, but works nonetheless.

As an IT player, I would consider myself "in business" as soon as I build any/300 gates all around my gate system.

Exactly.

With already construction 10 and prop 6 tech an IT gets what is needed to gate around every ship including the heaviest missile-BBs.

As long as you don't exceed the 100% damage, so far I have never seen a ship vanishing due to overgating as an IT. Together with rapair-after-gating you can repair upto 30% damage instantly upon arrival... this is very powerful. In a small universe an IT doesn't need anything more than the any/300 gate.

Non-ITs on the other hand see constantly some of their ships vanishing due to overgating which adds up to quite some extra costs.

Hi ,

maybe this helps:

100/250 - you need to move your first pop and minerals to your
new kolonized worlds

any/300 - You need for your fleet movement in "war" time Medium
Univers and smaller

any/800 - you need only in Medium Univers and bigger or if you
have a ally who wants to us your system and dont want
to loose ships.

100/any - need for scanning of enemy gates !!!! Very important.

Any/300s are your general-purpose gates, so they're useful.

Any/800s help in universes bigger than small.

100/anys allow you to trump stealthed gates, because 2% of infinity is still infinity (also, ISB trumps any/800 gatescan whether stealthed or not). You only need one, though.

If you happen to have the tech for any/anys, you should probably replace your 100/any with one, but that's it.
