My home computer crashed hard 2 nights ago, won't turn on, no video output.

Last night I took it apart to investigate the problem.

It looks like my video card (EVGA GeForce 7600 512mb) fan had died some time before, and the heat has melted the plastic around the fan axle. Also, 4 of the large capacitors on the video card are cracked open and leaking which is hopefully the cause of the computer not booting.

I've placed an order for a replacement card, this one which is scheduled to arrive Nov. 29 due to the Thanksgiving USA holiday (usually only takes 3 days).

Thanks to Stars! community members, I was able to pay for it from the donations to Stars! AutoHost through PayPal. wOOt 2

I'm trying to setup Thunderbird on my netbook laptop so I can access my Stars! AutoHost email and answer any emails that may have come in while my desktop is down.

That is one powerful graphics card.

Can your desktop handle so powerful a graphics card ? Your old graphics card almost certainly didn't require that much power, and it certainly didn't require a PCI Express 2.0 slot.

Is there room for the new graphics card ? The card takes up two slots of space.

If there were capacitors leaking on the old graphics card, then I hope the stuff that leaked out only got on the old graphics card, if it got on any other electronics then it will have to be thoroughly cleaned off. You do not want an electrical connection where there isn't supposed to be one.

Yes, it can handle it. Its a 3.0Ghz dual-core system, and has enough space.

There were no cards under the video card, so any liquid leaks would have landed on the bottom of the case, not on any circuit boards.

Oddly, Stars! is one of the games where I've found the progression of technology most pronounced. The extra screen space I've gained over the years is amazing. I recall that playing it on 800x600 was cramped to say the least. The same goes for the spreadsheet use that goes hand in hand with end games on anything but the smallest universes Smile
