I don't think windows 7 will even let you place something directly in the c:\ drive, not sure though.
PS: another problem I was having was I didn't realize at first that you could open the .config files with notepad Wall Bash which explained why the instructions were so confusing

I've heard that Windows 7 don't allow you to save anything anywhere except on special folders... But I don't use Windows 7 and I'd consider that as a very retarded mechanism anyways...

If there is something I'd want for security, it is to be able to save my file somewhere else than where a hacker would look first and foremost... Rolling Eyes

You have a very, very, very strange version of XP. This kind of behavior would have been laughed at simply because the thought of it is so ridiculous by the time XP got out.

Heck, when XP got out most people were still using '98. And '98 still used a DOS interface to boot up! You can guess how your statement doesn't make any sense to any experienced computer user.

This behavior have been confirmed to me by many people since I have wrote this. However, I think it can be circumvented if you mess up with the options. And I've been told that old programs are made to believe by the Windows 7 code to think that the new directory is exactly the same as the old C:\Windows one and should theoretically work just the same.

What I haven't been confirmed is if STARS! do work if the supposedly messed up directory is too long. I have first hand experience that a too long directory will prevent STARS! from working correctly... Since I only have second hand information and that I would not know how the Windows 7 code works in the first place, I have no way to know.

No, that's not the issue under discussion.

XP doesn't allow C:\Stars.exe, ie a file directly in the drive.

Attempting to put a file (say, Stars.exe) directly in the C: drive does not work under XP.

Putting a folder in it works fine.

I'm sure you have not given your account the proper permissions.

Go to C:\, Tools, Folder Options, View tab and remove the tick on "hide protected operating system files".

I also remember that when you go to C:\windows, it shows a shield and none of the files and shows you an alert message asking if you are sure you want to access the contents of the system drive.

Oh, I can go into C:\Windows fine.

Meh, I haven't tried anything like this for ages anyway, since it's so untidy to have stuff directly in the drive.

Hey guys I havn't been around sense Jan. I miss the great games Iv had with many of you.

I finally got a new computer and I wanna play on my 46 inch tv which would make this game more epic than ever!!

So my computer is windows 7 64bit which I hate due to the compatibilty issues. Its only home version so I can't do a virtual xp.

Is that dos based version (or something like that) I heard about realiable and safe for my computer and easy to use?

I think dos is my only option?

Oracle virtual box is awesome. I started using it for Stars! but know use it for a couple older programs.

So I have an XP desktop in a window on my 7 desktop. Still need a copy of XP and serial, but that is not too difficult to come by.

The "dos version" on the Wiki is simply a DOSBox basic build with a Win 3.11 copy reinstalled. DOSBox is perfectly safe for any computer so fire away.

DOSBox is a freelance project which has been started in the beginning of Windows XP when old games diehards realized that they could not play them anymore due to Microsoft dropping DOS compatibility (almost) completely. It has since then been upgraded for the newer Windows versions and is really a must if you need to run DOS based programs on newer OSes.

Using the 3.11 build would also allow you to run any 16 bits program specifically made for Win 3.11. Which mean most of them.

I have downloaded the jrc3 zip 1.43mb ( I forgot which one was the best, jrc4?)and the dosbox file from the wiki page. I extracted both in same folder. What kind of program do I open the dosbox.confi file with?

Edit: Hopefully someone can talk me through the dosbox issue if they don't have anything else to do.

As far as I know, Gible included everything you need in his Win3.11 archive. You only need to unpack and fire away.

In case you do want to know, the DOSBox config can be opened with notepad... Just like 95% of all the config files in existence.

You should really read the DOSBox help file before venturing on.

I remember using it and it worked ... but that's all I'll say about it. It worked. Not something that I would like using on a regular basis. It was not smooth at all and it felt.. "uncomfortable".

I much prefer it on my Win XP machine.

I remember that there was a readme file or some instructions for getting it to work.. I'll download the file and let you know, in a bit.

The Oracle virtual box suggested by neilhoward seems really cool,
www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
but you'll have to get an XP install cd.
If you have that, we'll take it further.
If not, then lets go with Dosbox.

Dosbox.
1. Install Dosbox (It's currently 0.74).
www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

2. Install it (Keep default settings or take note of any change in install directory path)

3. Get gible's stars dump (4.92mb, last in the game files list).
http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Downloads

4. Unzip to C:\DOSBoxC
(we'll put it in another directory in the end. This just simplifies explaining things)

5. Create a shortcut and enter :
"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf "C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf"
(note that you have to change .72 to .74 in the path. Dosbox's older version is referred to in the readme file.)

6. Double click this shortcut.

7. Enter your serial number in the stars box that opens up.
You are good to go.

You can now change the C:\Dosboxc to any other path.. just make the change in the shortcut as well.
You might need to mess around with the settings as the mouse cursor seemed too fast for me.

Nmid.

Ok.. he's up and running.
Checklist to follow.

STEP A
Install dosbox to
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74

Check : Type
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74
in START>RUN.

if it opens up and shows you a folder, (as per my screenshot), Step A is done.

STEP B
Unzip gible's files in
C:\

Check : Type
C:\DOSBoxC
in START>RUN.

if it opens up and shows you a folder, (as per my screenshot), Step B is done.
IMPORTANT > Make sure you don't have C:\DOSBoxC\DOSBoxC
It happens if you unzipped to C:\DOSBoxC

STEP C
"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf
YOU DONT HAVE TO TYPE ANYTHING IN THE VM.
Just run the shortcut.

If stars run, Step C is done Very Happy

After 28 emails and 3 hours or so of back and forth emails I finally got it. Soon as he made those organized lists and check lists and us sending screen shots I got it. It really isn't easy for someone like me not use to setting up files. To use the basic readme help Id never get it. If I was file fancy it would have probably took 10 minutes. nmid is the bomb for patiently helping me out.

Glad I got this stars dos box up and running but man is it weird having to hold the left mouse button down to look at ships on planets and such things like scrolling is awkward. This is definitely a temporary set up.

Started doing a test game. Ill be looking for a dual soon.

Definitely follow nmids guide if you need to play stars on your 64bit windows.

P.s. Taking off 16 bit from windows was the most retarded thing Microsoft could do. oh and is this stars dos box usable with autohost?

Dosbox will work with Autohost and I am quite sure nmid will beat me to lieutenant.

Get your hands on a XP install disk or download a copy. VirtualBox works sooo much better, and you can use it for other stuff too. When I turn mine on, I have it set to bring up all my games just as I left them. It can make file management easier too.

I will be ready to duel Friday. Challenge accepted.

Here in the UK the difference for Win 7 64 bit between an OEM Home version and an OEM Professional version is about £30.00. ($40.00?) I guess the difference for retail (non OEM) packs might be a bit more but it may be worth finding out the cost of upgrading your Home version. I understand all Win 7 installation disks have everything required for all versions - it is just the installation code which decides what version you get.
