Hi, me again with more annoying questions! I can work notebook and Xborders and come up with lots of nice pretty pictures of the solar system as I know it, and that's all well and good. What I want to know, is is there any way of getting it to save information for more than one turn? Is there no way of being able to switch between gamee years and seeing how the borders have changed?

The goat whats YOU.

I don't know about XBorders.

Stars! Notebook:
* the tactical map you can save as a bmp-file (and then better convert it to png or jpg to reduce the excessive space a bmp-file fills up)... together with comments and some arrows this makes for nice tactical maps you can later show off
* you can easily create an archive the very same way you most likely do for your Stars-files: copy all files including the Stars-Notebook's .vec and .snb-file into a subdirectory before storing the newest .m and .p-files

Usually my directory looks like this:
../stars (stars .exe and .hlp files)
../stars/gamename (newest turn with .m, .h, .xy etc, files)
../stars/gamename/2400 (all files of 2400)
../stars/gamename/2401 (all files for 2401)
and so on.

Here an example for the Duel Championship Final 2007 (59 kb).

Naturally, if you have the year-by-year archives in directories, it's possible to load up any year and generate a notebook/xborders image from that relatively easily at any time.

This isn't really true about Stars! Notebook.
It reads .p-files only and not the .h-files, so you'll get statistics and a map for this one year but not with the accumulated data of all previous years. So to get a map that also shows the HW of your enemy you discovered 5 years ago, you'd also need to load the p-file from 5 years ago. Otehrwise it's like opening stars without the history-file.

It's much easier just to save the Stars! Notebook files with the accumulated data along with the other files.

I guess I should take more regular snb backups...
