There seems to be quite good emulation currently, with different projects for clients and servers. Two years after having written a technology browser for FreeStars, I am continuing my work by writting a complete client. An alpha version is now available at:

http://pascal.wassong.free.fr/Etoiles/

It is written in Java and should work on many platforms, including Windows, Linux and Mac. You need Java 1.5 (or more) installed on your computer. The program is launched via WebStart, meaning you just have to click on the link from the page to start the latest version.

It is not yet possible to play a game with it, many parts are still missing, but I am slowly completing the work.

If you have problems, questions or comments, don't hesitate to send me a mail (the address is on the page).

Have fun,
Orion

Just looking at the screenshot's, how much of the interface in is french? Have you used language files(complete or otherwise) to quickly change between languages?

Also I added it to the wiki Smile

The interface is completely translated in 2 languages : english and french. The program starts in french on a french system, and in english otherwise.

There are language files, and it is "easy" to add a new language. I say "Easy" because I just need to add the new language files to my program for the language to be taken into account. But translating all the files can be quite time consuming.

The screenshots are from version 0.1, which contained only the tech browser. I hope to soon have time to add many more screenshots from different parts of the client.

Thank you for adding Étoiles to the wiki.

I just updated the site with screenshots from the latest version of Étoiles. You can now see what it looks like without having to start the game.

One month later...

Today, I updated Étoiles 0.2 It contains many minor improvments and two major ones. First, it now really works with Java 1.5. This means that it now really works on Mac. And also it is now possible to transfer cargo. A screenshot is for cargo transfer is viewable on the screenshots page (see URL in previous post).

To test this new version, it is necessary to download again the example files. They have changed. Étoiles crashes with some of the old files.

I have 2 questions concerning transfer of cargo. How much cargo is it possible to add to a mineral packet ? And to salvage ? I made some tests and have an answer, but it would be nice that my ideas are confirmed. Do you have an opinion about it ?

Packets are "full" when launched, so you can only upload minerals after you've removed some, but they don't have to be of the same type...I'm not sure about uploading colonists. I'd hope you can't but it would be an interesting way of packetting planets when you have an abundance of people but not minerals

Correct. You can't. Good thing too. Smile

For colonists, I think that it is impossible. That's what I have implemented in my client.

Now what is the full capacity of a packet ? Let me show you a scenario : a packet is launched. I remove half of the minerals that are in the packet. I wait one turn, and I want to add again minerals to the packet at it's next step. Is it possible ?

In other words, is the full capacity, the capacity at the moment it was launched, or the maximum at the beginning of the current turn ?

as far as I remember: the maximum is the size at the beginning of the turn (and so the server does not have to send the original size to the client too, and another player does not know how much your package degraded [and so how far you are away and perhaps your PRT] the first time he sees it)
