one more thing:
AR cant use the cheap starbase trick, as it only works if
there is no base... and AR always has a base...

makes them even weaker... Crying or Very Sad
I wanted to go off on a tangent here, so I extracted this from another forum and began a new thread.

I don't know about weak. I always thought AR were weak because I couldn't do anything with them personally, but playing one game as the next-door neighbor of Freakyboy's AR race changed my mind. Freakyboy makes them seem powerful to me. I've never played with Apelord but Freakyboy defers to him, saying he learned everything he knows from Apelord. Apelord must be a good AR player indeed. I'm betting if I ever see Apelord's AR races I'll be inclined to crack open that darned college algebra textbook sitting dusty on my shelf (I couldn't throw it away, it costed a fortune and it's just like new), trying to make sense of all the square root garbage and trying to remember proper formula calculation sequences so I can give that AR race yet another try. I think I'll call them the SQuiRT's.

hmmmm, let's see... what the heck is a square root again? How am I supposed to figure out the shoe size of the average AR citizen without knowing what a sqare root is? Let's see, "shoe size = SQRT(toes * 10)/2"... Confused ...oops, wrong listing (shoes size, silly me, I want scanning capability, not shoe size), here it is right above shoe size, "SCANNING CAPABILITIES = (here we go again) SQRT(population/10)", well, forget it dammit! I'll just stick to the basics here...RESOURCE PRODUCTION = SQRT(blah blah blah times blah blah blah divided by .....) ARGH! Yuck How about factories? Can't we just make some factories inside the starbase? Puhleeeaase? If we really REALLY want to? I can understand "every 10 factories produces x number of resources".
...

I have played AR with very good race designs, and I went through the fragile phase (2400-2460) with good diplomacy but even with a strong economy (it was impressive to be #1 in 9 after only 55 turns), it is very sad to see a whole planet disappear in one turn with only a couple of BB with suicide orders (or simply a bunch of chaff), when you have to put out a whole army to be able to bomb ennemy planets (and you have to protect your bombers etc.). And mind you, Bombers are expensive. It takes 2 to 4 turns to destroy a non-AR planet if you don't want to risk your bombers on turn 1 of the attack. This 4 to 1 factor makes a huge difference. Your ennemy destroy your planets almost as fast as he can sweep your mine fields...

Yes you can take almost all your pop and recolonize later, but all this is lost time and economy, and it only works if the enemy is not progressing further into your space...

Of course if you get your race into the late game when your mineral fountain is flowing, and you are the one attacking, AR is a strong race. But for 60 turns or more, AR has a fatal flaw and you cannot remedy it. Unless you play a game with no "kill starbase" order.

You can be good at diplomacy but if your WM neighbour decides you are his first meal, you will have difficulty to survive.
Still, AR is fun to try and play, although MM in the late game can be overwhelming. (because you have to play in at least a medium universe otherwise you won't get the critical size)

FWIW,

Good points, all, but if your WM neighbor decides you are his first meal it most likely won't matter which PRT you are playing, right? You're going to die or be hopelessly crippled while the others happily construct their factories and mines, researching tech, expanding, etc. If you prevail, you'll probably be too far behind too catch up. I kind of regard the WM as a spoiler race, right behind the PP for having little chance of winning, but making sure early on that the guy next door with a WONDERFUL race design won't win either.

All in theory of course, since my experience with WM's is limited. Never played one, and one played against one. He was a real pain in the behind until I finally was ready to attack, put the hurt on him, and then he allied with me. Right Micha? Razz But that was a long time ago, Micha was playing as a replacement, and was probably at least as ignorant as me back then. Good times. Smile

I think someone missed the word "seem" in "Freakyboy makes them seem powerful to me"

My race is ranked 5th. I've got about 20 planets or so and my race is only just beginning to get anywhere since I managed to get death stars to 33% capacity.

I would normally never give out details of my race on a forum but this game is fairly lost anyway - my race is too weak.

I picked a bi-immune 12% growth rate. Granted my few planets are wonderful but that crippling growth has killed me. In order to get the tech I wanted cheap I had to sacrifice ISB.

The only reason I seem powerful is because I have several mineral fountains set up and my only limit is my resources. I think I also have amongst the highest tech in the game.

The only reason my race is still around is because I got friendly with Zoid early on and the only races around me were 2 more AR's - one of which who I've only seen a couple of ships from... none armed and the other made an attack on me and the war is still going on.

My race is weak and of poor design. I just got lucky.

I The only reason my race is still around is because...

I think it is quite different to have to defend against a WM as an AR in the early game than as a JoaT, an IS or a CA... For nobody it is fun, but against AR, a WM just needs some warships in numbers (no bombers) to destroy your helpless starbases (in best case space station, more probably space docks). You just don't have the minerals yet to build a counter army, even if you have better techs, which is often the case Sad Even if you can stop it at some point, you are badly wound too early and won't make it...

I won't expand on WM in this thread but IMHO, WM is not a spoiler race. WM players have won many games and can make very good allies. In big enough games, they need to find an ally to be able to survive in the late period, since they are vulnerable alone at that moment. BTW, that's when AR can kick their butt for all those bad moments in the previous games! Now that's fair ROFLMAO

Cheers,

YucaF
