As a new player to human play, I have recently been playing around with SS and am impressed by the speed I find out about my ever so friendly neighbours. After a few sacrifices, in working on a -f SS I find I have of 3.5 cheap tech available (as I think is pretty normal, as 4+ cheap completely wrecks available RW points?), but I am not sure how to arrange it. My gut feel is:
cheap En, Weps & Con;
Standard Prop (I have a nasty habit of picking IFE);
Expensive Elec and Bio.

However, this seems to be against the SS Elec specialisation, which may imply Standard En & Elec?

Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated?

Cheers
S.

Well, my gut feel is:
el, wep, con cheap
en normal
prop, bio expensive

If you are taking IFE, prop expensive works very well
El cheap means SS toys come faster...
weap cheap is a no-brainer

It's a toss up between con and en for the last cheap... SS can use Rogue hull instead of cruiser, which comes 1 level faster, so the SS can handle normal con better than most races. SS wants to win the game before nubians if it can (especially -f SS,) another reason con cheap isn't so critical. (Nubian = overcloaking for everyone, reducing the impact of the SS advantage.)

I'd go with both Normal.
Costs you less (resources) that way if you are researching both at anywhere near a similar speed.
Both normal is effectively 1 + 1 = 2
1 cheap and 1 exp is 1.75 + 0.5 = 2.25
So you will pay up to 1/8th more resources to get both to any given level (say 10 or 16) if you go with the latter.

Can also set Con normal and make one of the E's cheap if you really want to get an advantage in that area (say En 16 if grav-immune).
Expand early using MFs (cost less Iron and more Germ which is a good bet for a -f).
Perhaps stay at 3.0 cheap and invest the points elsewhere (probably hab for a -f race).

Interesting to know whether the better hab, or having more terra sooner through cheaper tech would produce better results.

Yes, cheap El is nice, but Prop expensive works better if you take NRSE, not just IFE.
Not sure if SS is one of those races that should avoid NRSE, and -f may want to build a horde, also avoiding NRSE.

So El cheap would mean Con normal for me, but swings and roundabouts.

I tested almost this, except with En and El the other way around, a few days ago. It worked well, but my concern with prop expensive was that in the early stages I found it difficult to get gates by a reasonable year. Of course, this didn't contemplate tech trading, or knocking off a few of some poor ITs early RHRS scouts (its important to make friends early Very Happy) But yes, after prop 5, prop was kind of sidelined for a long time ...

I am tempted to think along these lines. It's like when you want to sell something you always give people less choices so it's easier to get to a decision. If I go with 3.0 cheap, then I have less choices so I may get to a decision. Smile

Con and Weapons cheap, bio expensive, rest normal.
Also i would consider Radiation immune. Nod

Reasoning: Even if you take IFE+NRSE (i would avoid these with -F) you will want to have the 100/250 and 300/500 gates quite early. Also you may find Energy 9 packets very useful tool for enlarging your empire.
Meanwhile you may still use Bazooka and M-70 as sufficent offensive weapons. Later of course you will want to jump with weapons high (so it is cheap) however early interest in propulsion and energy suggest for Radiation immune.
Cool

If you will be tech trading, taking el cheap looks really nice, as it's a very unusual tech to have cheap, so should get you a nice price in trade... Tech trading hurts the 0.5+1.75 vs 1+1 costing argument, since you plan to be trading to get the expensive tech, rather than researching it.

In a duel or no-friends game then more normal techs certainly looks a good option.

Not sure about the logic that prop normal is good for hordes... FM looks pretty nice to me... After the DLL7, the engines are a bit pricey for horde use... If he has IFE, I'd say prop expensive is fine. If he doesn't have NRSE, the prop expensive could be painfull, as getting to prop16 for warp10 might not be possible through trade.
