Those links should be working - I just tried the top few and all of them seem to work.... the only thing that might be a problem is that the 2.7 links are for the .exe so do not contain the supporting dll files.

I can post a copy of the files for the full version to an alternative location for you, but I am afraid you are on your own when it comes to serial numbers Rolling Eyes

or you can get it from here......

Note for those who don't already know: Stars! 2.6 and 2.7 are completely play compatible with each other. v2.7 was the Empire Interactive version which has sound effects during battles and can play CD audio tracks. v2.6 does not have sound.

Jrc4 is the latest patch level, and v2.6 is the only version with a patch level that high.

I think we need to answer three questions:

1. Where is Stars! right now, and where is it going? Specifically, is it dying?
2. If it is dying, what can we do to prevent that?
3. What can we learn from the past to prevent the mistakes, disagreements, and other problems that contributed to disunity?

1. I think Stars! is dying.
2. Join the game, advertise amongst friends, or speak with the developers.
3. Stars!... Isn't a game you can pick-up and just start playing. The game takes a lot of time to learn, and excel at. I dislike being held-back by schedules, or slow tick-times, when playing against others. I do not feel the need to join the Autohost.org community, when there are already better games out there, that are more fast-paced yet share the same tactical-elements.

Stars! Does not appeal to Socializers and Killers (see: Bartle).
The steep learning-curve and tick-based nature of the game makes Stars! lose its appeal over MMOGs which are specifically designed to reach a multiplayer-audience.

Please PM me if you respond to any of my points, as this is my first and only post on these forums.

That Bartle wikipedia page was really interesting, although I feel the questions asked in the test itself are really vague and open to interpretation which in my mind, makes the test almost useless.

I find your third comment very interesting when you talk about scheduling times and communities. I've been a World of Warcraft (a true MMOG) player for the past few years and have found that scheduling and communities are a huge part of that game as well, so I'm not sure how it's different to Stars! (unless you play unusually and avoid all the social and end-game aspects of the game).

From looking at the Bartle guide, I would say I'm a explorer, socialiser and killer, but not really an achiever. Despite that, I'm intending to leave World of Warcraft and am returning to Stars! after many years away. So based on your information that killers and socialisers are not suited to this game, why would I come back? I'm personally returning because I've grown tired of the significant commitment required to be competitive in the game, the endless re-play of the same material and the lack of intellect required to really do anything.

I think the key words in your post are "fast-paced" and "a lot of time to learn, and excel at". Anybody looking for a fast-paced game that you can get into quickly isn't really going to find Stars! to their liking Smile I like it for the opposite reason, that it gives me time to do other things and a intellectual challenge to match it up with other players.

To each their own.

What makes the test almost useless is that almost all the questions are relate to MMORPGs like WoW.

STARS! is not an MMORPG. It is a PBEM multiplayer strategy game.

The simple fact that STARS! is a strategy game change literally everything. Because MMORPGs are more action oriented, while strategy games are all about planning your next move and having the time to think about it. Like chess.

Comparing apples to oranges never been an appeal to me.
