Hi,

I just wondered if the history file used by stars has been decoded? If it is, it should be possible to write a tool that can merge multiple history files into one. This would result in seeing in Stars the intelligence data from your ally.

I was told that such a tool does not yet exist, so I'll just give it a try, if I have sufficent information on the file structure of the history file.

Next step would be to be able to select what you want to share, and what not...

I think Wumpus already made such a tool, but has not released it. I think he must have decided not to release it because it exposes the encryption used by stars. (I could be wrong on that, just based on some vague memories of some old emails.)

PricklyPea has modded a stars! version that produces files without encryption, probably published somewhere on his site. http://darkcluster.com/
For it you can make such a tool without having the encryption algorithm.
However:
Sad All players have to use that hacked version to play their turns.
Sad Files produced do not run on AutoHost.
Sad Playing host (or whoever who has access to files) can merge all the knowledge into his history with your tool.

btw why you post same question to bar and freestars, HWF isnt usenet. Easy to read all at once. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the answers...
I didn't think about the host possibility to abuse it. I actually think it should be feasible to set it up in a way, that you need to provide your password, then export it in some plain text format. This file would then be passed to whom ever, and then merged back into (the encrypted) history file of the destinee. All depends on the encryption code...

@Kotk
1.The hacked version wouldn't be a solution, I'm more aiming at the standard version. Also, I think if you don't trust your host, you'll have to find some setup...
2.Well, actually I didn't post the same question twice, I asked first for an existing tool in the bar, as I got the answer that such a tool doesn't exist, or wasn't known off. I just looked into the h file, as it wasn't readable, I asked a different question, which is about the algorithm to decode the h file. And this question, in my opinion has to be asked in this coding part of the forum. So even if both question are related, they are two different questions.

Of course all these things are just my opinion, and others may have different opinions.

Encryption code does not take ones pw into account. Actually i know encryption algorithm i dont know pw checking algorithm. Confused

It is never about me trusting host. I have won games where some opponents cheats were barely hidden. Also, I have never accused someone in cheating. Cheaters i have met have always been weaker than me players. What I dont like is the probability that someone loses major battle and then spoils the whole game with foul accusations about host cheating. Evil or Very Mad
If you have once found out that you have invested 50-100 hours into a spoiled (by others) game then it makes you cautious too. Wink

Techically you are right. Sorry. What i meant that you asked for exactly same answer twice. Yes, Wumpus, who has best knowledge of stars! file structures has made such a tool already. He also found solid reasons to not publish that tool. Nod

Contact PauCr. If you're persuasive enough, he might code it for you. Cheers

PaulCr has some sort of dll to handle that. Perhaps you can code against that. Ask him. Deal

Hmmm I emailed him and captain main a couple weeks ago, with no response. If anybody else has any info about this please let me know - I think a tool like this would be very helpful, and we don't want the info about the files to be lost..

Still no response from PaulCr. I'm still hoping to learn how the Stars! files are encrypted so I can work on such a tool. Let me know if you have any information...

Something like this would be great. In a game where you have a predefined alliance you should always be able to see there scans and see planet habs according to your own race settings.
