In other words, only IT races have spent enough gazillion years gating around to have evolved the very particular abilities needed to gate thru infinity and not implode in the process... Rolling Eyes

Obviously, evolution had nothing to do with it, because all the Stars! universes and their races have been created. Lurking

make it possible to acquire such a technology through battle/pop drops.

Wouldn't that blur the differences between races a bit too much? Confused

I was commenting on not needing an MT to enable the gain of race specific technology, not whether it was desired/balanced/fair.

Besides, to a certain extent, such trading already exists ofc: TD's, OA's etc.

But, if you gain inf/300 gate technology you haven't automatically gained the ability to overgate to the same extent an IT does, nor can you ship pop or minerals so you still have considerable IT advantages.

So while some blurring will occur, it is distinctly limited where it is the innate, non-technological advances that make the race different.

Ahhh, but then the cost/ease of getting a potentially game-changer tech/ability would be a part of the balance. Sherlock

But an HE or even a WM could benefit a lot from being able to gate warships, even the most massive ones. Teleport

A WM could get to build its own minelayers too, and there would be gone one of its most distinctive disadvantages. New Shocked

Space cow? Space cowboy son. Laughing

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love...

Cause I'm a picker
I'm a grinner
I'm a lover
And I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I'm a joker
I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I sure don't want to hurt no one

So they may get played more often in Vanilla games rather than in more specialized ones thereby adding more variety. If the costs of the technologies is right, I doubt they'd be a game-breaker ... and you'll note I suggested particular conditions to be able to acquire tech in this way ...

e.g. if you have 3 levels above each of the required techs for any/300 gate and you destroy one, then you get a small chance of learning the technology for yourself OR it may be that you must have a minimum of level 10 in each tech before the ability to gain such technologies can even kick in (otherwise everyone would want to be friends with or always attacking JoaT scouting hulls).

... which would mean such races would still need to survive a good time into the game before they could benefit from such things.

i.e. to get minelayers through battle the WM would first need to have researched bio7 for the first possibiliy or bio10 for the second.

Hmmmm. Seems so.

JoaT's always get it tough Razz

But you might argue that the hull itself is the technology so it can be passed on.

I'd probably suggest harder requirements to get that kind of tech. Pirate

Hmmm... I've always thought it was the intrinsic techno-mashup ability of the JoaT-born crews that enabled them to turn small ships into essentially one big scanner, but only for skilled Joat operators, and that was why all transfer attempts always failed.

There is still the "small probability" hurdle to get over as well!

How often have you transferred MT part's to another player?

In all the games of played, I can only recall gaining an MT part (MPS) through battle once. I've only built the required (167 IIRC) scrappers for another player to have a good chance of getting an MT part once.

Either narrative is reasonable depending on whether it is decided that the tech can be xferred.
