Hi folks,

In an effort to get more folks enjoying Stars!, I plan to host a series of 6-player games for beginners and intermediates. Hex I is for beginners only. If you can hit 25k (or even close to that) by 2450 please sign up for Hex II, the first intermediate game.

Games will get off to a quick start, generation-wise, and will take place in small universes to encourage faster play. As soon as I get six race files I'll start the game. If more people want to play I'll create a second game.

Hex I

Hosting
Hosted on AutoHost
Host will not be playing

Players
6 players - if there's more interest I'll create another game
Beginners only - if you can get 25k by 2450, then sign up for Hex2 for intermediates

Generation time
24 hours for the first 25 years (2400 - 2424)
36 hours for the next 25 years (2425 - 2449)
48 hours for the remainder of the game (2450 onwards)

Game settings
Small/Normal/Distant
Slower Tech Advances
Public Player Scores
Accelerated BBS Play

PRTs
CA is banned
JOAT cannot select NAS

Victory conditions
Only one person can win.
Alliances are allowed during the game, but an alliance cannot win.

Cheats (copied from Kang's new game)
Cheating is not allowed. Look here for standard cheating rules
Chaff is a tactic, not a cheat.
Splitting a fleet to avoid pursuit is a tactic, not a cheat
Chaff sweeping is a tactic unless it allows a fleet to miss battle at it's destination.(Battle board overload)
Splitting fleets to a single destination to ensure the highest number cannot be targetted is a cheat, not a tactic. (i.e. - Having greater than 100 fleets at the destination so that the largest number is not able to be targetted..)

Get in the game
Send me an email right away to hold your place (bzzz <dot> oik <at> sbcglobal <dot> net -- replace with . and @ as necessary) Posting your interest in this forum (e.g. Count me in) will not reserve a place for you.
Send a race file without password (host is not playing) within 48 hours. If 48 hours passes without a race file being sent you may lose your place.

Let me know if I misses something or if you have any questions please post a reply to this forum.

Cheers,
Zoiker

If there is still availability in this game, I would very much like to play. I am a new player, just dusted off my copy of stars from 10 years ago, and patched up. I've been practicing against the AI and would love to try a game with other new players.

Well, here goes my cover. Wink

Hey Mich, long time we spoke on Stars! forum.
Well, considering being once a teacher, was only in the time of stone-age, where we only knew how to throw rocks, without taking into account gravity nor target-movement.
I suppose that nowadays players have more advanced techniques and tools at their disposal. Razz

So to hope and meet worthy opponents, meeting again my long-lost sleepless nights at Stars. Very Happy

That does seem a mystery. I hope if the host doesn't return, someone else comes up with a game soon. It would be fun.

His last game must have been in ... 2002? IIRC he played very few to none games in 2000 and 2001 ... I played a lot more and _did_ became better. Wink Student becoming master and whole that. Wink Very Happy

You'll find him pretty rusted. Laughing

LOL,
Yeah Micha summarized it pretty well. Smile
And seen my age, yeah, call me rusted.
But my mental state on the other hand is still a youngster.

Allthough, I haven't played *** since ages, I guess I lost a lot of it. Confused
I even can't find back my original Stars!-cd, grrr, guess I have to dig a little deeper.
Yup, I lost it ... Razz Time is eating my memories.

Ashlyn, yep I mailed Zoiker today. And I think C64 mailed him as well a few days ago. Both of us didn't get an answer until now.

And about being too tough too play this level. I might remember a few tricks from "those days". And I will certainly be of any help ingame, for the starters among us and who knows Micha ... maybe I become a master again. Razz

Eager to start off once more ... hopefully Zoiker shows up ...

If he doesn't reply, I suppose someone else could do a beginner's game; there seems to be a few people who have posted in this thread expressing interest.

Wow... There's an awfull lot of pedigree here for a beginner game. Eek

The game description says that Hex is supposed to be a game for those that _cannot_ make 25k by 2450 with ACCBSS. It then says that Hex II will be for those than can.

I wonder if perhaps the players here need to be seperated into two groups, perhaps 'beginners' and 'experienced beginners' Very Happy

Well pedigree is what you measure it to be. It's all about Einsteins relativity. Razz

It is not in my intent to be able to win a game easily.
My nature is more in helping out people, where it lies in my possibilities to do so.
And maybe it helps to sooth your mind, to say that I even doesn't remember where I ended with my resources in year 2450.
I yesterday started an AI-game, with some basic race. I'll let you know, where I end up in the fifties. Wink
If some intermediate game might show up, I am glad to join it.

Let's spam Zoikers mailbox, maybe he wakes up. Wink

Players interested for now:

MortonHQ
Cerindil
yoey
c64k
Woody(me)
Maim

We don't need zoiker, do we? (since he won't be playing in Hex I anyway) Can't one of us be the host?

25k by 2450 is mentioned a lot on the boards and i know that i can consistently get half of that. Wall Bash I definitely fit the skill level of this game. wOOt 1

since it is a beginner game, i would assume there is not much hosting experience in here. but this board does have the attention of some experienced players, maybe one of them would be gracious enough to offer. Poke

Possible but chance of harder feelings as not neutral when deciding for example how to handle a dropped player.

I personally have never hosted a game, but would be willing to try if no better offers.

I can host, I've done it before.
I'm genuinely honest, and I'm more interested in making sure that everyone has a good game..

Maybe Micha would like to hold the race passwords.. (Since he seems so interested in seeing his mentor at play.)

If there's any problems with the game (such as dropped players or potential regens), it's easier to have a non-player host, but plenty of people host games they are in, so go for it if you want to.

Probably the first step is to get a 'yes I'm still interested' ping from the people who signed up for it.

It's poor form when someone who has offered to host a game disappears without giving some idea of the status of the game ... anyone who has signed up for the game has to decide whether to wait or find another game.
