Gen Schedule Poll[ 5 votes ]
1. Keep Current Schedule 4 / 80%
2. No Gens at Weekend 1 / 20%

Hi folks!

Yes, I know that we said the gen rate would be a standard 36 hours... but I have been asked by a player if we could move to a gen schedule that doesn't generate at weekends...

So, I pass the decision over to Player Power... Shocked

Vote away...

Cool

If we move to a schedule that doesn't gen at weekends then I would request that the gens between weekends are more frequent i.e. daily (which leads to a whole new set of problems...)

Personally, I don't want anything that will slow the game down at all - my internet access might get patchy for a few weeks around xmas, so I'm keen to get as far as possible before then (preferably dead or victor) Smile

I agree with the Dogs.

A daily gen on weekdays will make up for losing weekends.

Right now it is too slow when it takes 2 minutes (counting downloading, starting Stars, and uploading) to do my turn.

Hi,

I think it is not a matter of the time spent in doing the turn, but rather of internet/web access. Razz

Things are already tight with 36 hours/turn. Shocked

On the weekend issue, even if I think those who cannot play/upload on weekends should have thought it through before joining, I'll remain neutral. Evil or Very Mad

Looks like there is no way of resolving this issue, as everybody seems to want different things... Confused

This being the case, I think we will have to continue with the arranged schedule of a 36 hour maximum turnaround.

Perhaps we can consider a new timescale at 2420 or thereabouts...
...all input welcome.

Cool

Holiday
- I am off on my hols in a few weeks for one week. Whats the chance of a pause?
As I didnt get a hol this summer I am reluctant to miss it and I think my wife would kill me if I said I was staying home to do my stars turns.
(No internet cafe nearby - its Devon, they think electricity is a bit new and frightening let alone PCs) Laughing

Hmmm.....

Give the number of players involved, a little reluctant to execute a complete pause. Rolling Eyes

However, I wouldn't mind maybe doubling the turn gap for a week. Maybe you could even find a temporary replacement to keep things ticking over while you're gone?

I went to Devon once.
They chased me over the border with flaming brands, on account of the fact that I only have one head.... Shocked

I think you'll find it easy to find a replacement to cover for a week, if you post a message in the bar nice and early. The tricky bit will be making sure they don't try to blow anyone up Wink

I would be very disappointed to see the game paused at all for one player to take a vacation - it is up to any player taking a vacation to find a replacement player to cover for them. All the other players that are not on holiday shouldn't have to wait for a player that decides to take a holiday. It seems absurd to start a game knowing you have a vacation starting then ask within the first week for the game to be put on hold.........

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

Hi,

I vote on anyone going on vacation to at least try and get a temp replacement. Razz

About the schedule issue, I think we could reach a compromise agreeable to most, if not all. Sun is out Why not increase gen schedule to, say, 40 hours? It should not be noticeable at all in the days when everybody uploads his turn early, Cheers and the afforded slack for the days when not everybody can upload early won't kill most of us. Twisted Evil

What do you say, fellow peacenicks? Yes Deal Thumbsup 2

And, since the Forum seems to serve little purpose, I'll use email to
try and get my plea heard.

So far, we've "enjoyed" two weekends of mostly waiting and not playing.

So far, in weekdays it has not mattered whether we had a 36 hours turn
schedule, or a 48 hours, or a 30 hours, for that matter.

Or so it seemed.

If anyone has separate online time (i.e office) and playing time (i.e
home), the 36 hour schedule will sooner or later force him/her to
skip. The math is so simple I don't think it needs to be explained
again here.

I've been under that Damocles' Sword since day one. So far, sheer
timing luck has allowed me to keep going on.

No more.

Today I'll skip. Or else make such a botched rush of my turn that it
won't matter, anyway.

45 minutes is the abyss I cannot jump.

And the worst is, it will happen again, unless the damn schedule is changed.

I'm only asking for 4 more hours, or even two. Is it that much now
that things start to get interesting?

Please speak your mind, comrades, since the overwhelming silence in
the Forum so far has led me to believe nobody will notice if I
continue playing or not.

This galaxy is not fun anymore.

Yours in any fair competition,

There have been 9 replies to the thread about gen times in the forum, with several possible solutions and 5 players voting in the poll. I'm posting this to the forum as well as thorugh this email, in the hope that more people will start visiting the forum and we can continue the discussion there.

Your first post in the forum seemed to me to suggest that you thought there should be no pause at weekends, but I now suspect I must have misunderstood the tone of the message.

If a slowdown from 36 hours to 38 hours will make a big difference to anyone then it's small enough a change to be fine by me.

Joe.

I favour a 24 hour gen, seems to me that everyone regardless of time zone should be able to do their turns that way. We do have at least one player in Oz so weekend gen/no gen should consider the International Date Line, but otherwise, what's wrong with 24 hours and no weekend gen? As long as we can all agree to a time that works for everyone?

Can I just say on behalf of everybody;

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! Mad

Personally, I agree with the premise that in the early stages of the game, everybody should be able to cope with a 24 hour gen.
HOWEVER...

The game was originally advertised with a 36hr turnaround, and this being the case, it would be unfair to shorten the time period. After all, some people are probably playing because the gen time wasn't quite so short...

I'm currently of the mindset that an increase to 38 hours (as requested by two players) wouldn't an earth-shattering change..

Would this cause extreme annoyance, or is this an ok plan?

I'd like to get these little niggles sorted out asap.

Your thoughts please...

Cool

We already have typical turnarounds of about one turn a day without a need to impose additional constraints. Razz

The question is: what do we gain (or lose) by adhering to the 36 hour/turn? What do we gain (or lose) by allowing a slightly wider schedule?

And, finally, what will those who keep playing do when the time arrives when one turn is no longer doable in 5 minutes? Shocked

Sorry but I don't see a game where dropouts decide the course or even the winner as at all worth of my time, gentlemen. Sad

Well its time to add my vote.
I think that we should extend the time limit to allow the payer that is struggling to complete their turns, so 40 hours is fine with me.
There may be others who are not fine with this, some people are so dedicated to Stars that they don’t belive you should have a holiday if you are playing or join a game if you have a holiday planned in the next 6 months (or however long the game lasts).
To me the most important thing (after me winning of course Laughing ) is that people are encouraged to enjoy and not drop out of the game - hate quitters and they unballance it for the rest.

Mad

I've added a couple of hours to the scheduled schedule.. Wink

If that small amount of time makes all the difference, then it's probably a fair pay-off.

...but did you see? We almost got 2 turns in 24 hours just the other day! Shocked
