There are few PRT which can succesfuly fight against SS.

IS - obvius

JOAT - with a lot of chaff can move them to the border and see everything in the area

SD - with lot of minefields, since SD can see all cloaked ships inside his minefield, and if SS try to sweep them SD will see his ships.

PP - with his high speed packets

Others can only try to fight them in frontal war.

I don't believe that SD MFs see all cloaked ships, I think that the MF scanners have a percentage chance of seeing the ships equal to 100-cloaking%, so you have a 2% chance of seeing a 98% cloaked ship in your MF.

SD is good against SS mineral raiding because of the MFs.

Late game with no IS is playing blind man's bluff.

SS can cloak a bit easier with the Ultra-cloak and other toys. But any race with Super-stealth cloaks can build overcloakers and hide fleets. And SS have as much trouble finding them as any other race but IS does.

I'd say SD can fight SS because he detonates minefields and gets a warning (SS fleet hit), then sends in that area ships with scanners and lays more mines to pinpoint/trap intruder(s). Being 149 RW wizard points cheaper helps too. Wink
At least that's what I'm trying to do in my current game. Nod

The detection ability does not help in war aginst SD much, as a fleet gets on average only seen every 50th turn, but helps against backstabbing from SS.
A succesfull backstab normally, except endgame with conc 1 everywhere and 1 big fleet, requires to attack several important production centers, fleets, skirmishers clearing minefields and attacking minelayers and of course own minelayers, so backstabbing requires maybe 10+ fleets to maneuver themselfes into position. As maneuvering takes place inside minefields its slow so takes several turns, and e.g. 10 fleets being in SD fields for 5 turns yields a roughly 64% chance that one is spotted, which might give the 1 turn warning needed to survive the backstab.

Backstabbing is in my eyes attack from someone I've set to friend. He can use my stargates, he can safely speed through my minefields, so MF scanning is not an issue.
But the attack you mentioned is a "regular" sneaky attack I'm EXPECTING from the SS, thus most of my MFs in border area (and some in interior) go BOOOM every turn revealing the presence of cloaked ships. Then it's just a question of MM to send there scanners and interceptors to pinpoint them. Works against ANY cloaked fleet, not only SS.

You are right, i wrongly used the term backstabbing, suprise attack/ sneak attacks would have been better.

And i just tried to point at something where mine field detection helps although 98% cloaked, of course detonations are far more useful, but sometimes they cannot be used, so auto detection offers a furter protection against surprise attacks by cloaked fleets.

Carn

And just thinking of it many NAPs do not include switching to friend, but do limit the regions where mine field detonations are possible without violation of the NAP. Then auto detection could be useful.

But then the clever SD player would not agree to treaty that would keep him from establishing a explosion ring around all his colonies.

Shocked Filling border region with a friend with explosions? I would immediately change sides if i got such a friend. Nod One needs to use chainsaw cosmetics to keep friendly face with such a "clever" guy while negotiating others how to shut it. Laughing
Explosions are fine useful inside SD own territory and in enemy territory. Even there it is smart to warn your friends before starting.
