Hi all,
I just got back into my first game of Stars! in a couple of years (as a player, anyway, I'd been hosting a few). Now I've been running Stars! under Wine in Linux before in a large game and I don't remember having the problems I'm seeing in this game:
1. Fleets don't show up in the map pane unless I click on them (by guessing where they are, really, or using the fleet report)
2. Fleet waypoints only show when a fleet is selected. No other fleet's waypoints are displayed.
This is already not so nice when planning my scouting, but I suppose it will get really bad when I need to coordinate war-fleets !
I know all the pane options (and yes, I did select to display all those designs, waypoints etc) so that's not the issue. I'm using unmanaged windows in Wine build 20020804 under a 2.4.19 kernel.
Is this something we have to live with under Wine (I can't remember it being so bad though), or does someone have experience or just ideas even for fixing this?

Nope, that's not normal.
About the only thing guaranteed not to work is sound, which crashes the battle viewer. On my setup I have a small problem with fonts, and some of the dropdowns only show 2 entries at a time, but it's completely playable. That's with Wine 20030911 which is a bit later of course, and a 2.4.20 kernel.
Which version of Stars are you running ?
Did you install under Windows before playing under Linux ?

Rather than going with a regular Stars! installation, I tend to install Wine, download 2.6jrc3, copy over stars.ini from another installation, and go from there. No baggage from a win installation, which may or may not help.

I've been looking at this myself, but getting nowhere. Could you post a sample ?

Hmmm. That's exactly the same fonts settings that I have.
When you view the scorecard (F10), are the slanting player names readable for you ?

Hey Staz,
You probably need to change the Resolution value. You're not using the same graphics equipment as Kang, probably. I noticed while playing around with the fonts settings that changing the Resolution away from 96 made the slanted fonts unreadable (for me). If you have a smaller than 1152 Pixel wide screen, go for a lower value like '90' (guessing here, I'm no expert in this). Or higher, depending.
BTW, if you do a 'find / -name fonts.alias' (or look for fonts.scale), you'll find the abbreviations of known fonts on your system there. Here's my fonts settings:
"Resolution" = "96"
"Default" = "-adobe-helvetica-"
"DefaultFixed" = "-lucidasans-10"
"DefaultSerif" = "-adobe-utopia-"
"DefaultSansSerif" = "-URW-Gothic L-"
Stars only seems to care about the Default font and the SansSerif one. Gothic looks great for Stars, although at the default resolution the characters are very small in panes and dialogs (raising Resolution solves this, but creates the "F10-Problem" ).
Have fun,
Jan
