Hi all,

I just got back into my first game of Stars! in a couple of years Smile (as a player, anyway, I'd been hosting a few). Now I've been running Stars! under Wine in Linux before in a large game and I don't remember having the problems I'm seeing in this game:

1. Fleets don't show up in the map pane unless I click on them (by guessing where they are, really, or using the fleet report)

2. Fleet waypoints only show when a fleet is selected. No other fleet's waypoints are displayed.

This is already not so nice when planning my scouting, but I suppose it will get really bad when I need to coordinate war-fleets Mad !

I know all the pane options (and yes, I did select to display all those designs, waypoints etc) so that's not the issue. I'm using unmanaged windows in Wine build 20020804 under a 2.4.19 kernel.

Is this something we have to live with under Wine (I can't remember it being so bad though), or does someone have experience or just ideas even for fixing this?

Nope, that's not normal.

About the only thing guaranteed not to work is sound, which crashes the battle viewer. On my setup I have a small problem with fonts, and some of the dropdowns only show 2 entries at a time, but it's completely playable. That's with Wine 20030911 which is a bit later of course, and a 2.4.20 kernel.

Which version of Stars are you running ?

Did you install under Windows before playing under Linux ?

Well I am using a 100% linux native version and have no problems.

I was havng some problems, until I installed transgaming's wineX version, and it works almost perfectly. [Only problem is _sometimes_ I have a problem when I use the battle summary many times in one session].

The only advice I can give is see if a newer version of wine helps.

Sentio aliquos togatos contra me conspirare.

Hmm, I am using kernel 2.4.22 and wine build 20031016.
I recommend compiling wine yourself and using the wine-install script. I have had little or no problems like you are reporting using wine for about 6 years now.
As others have posted, a linux native version wrks best and the only real problem is when opening and closing reports windows such as fleet reports, ship reports battle reports etc. frequent opeing and closing can cause wine to crash.

The dropdown thing is not a problem for me either (good not to see too many of my enemies designs at once Very Happy). I'll try to get the later build and see how it goes.

v.2.7JRC3 Smile, sound switched off of course...

Yep, but I never had problems doing that before (except than wine and win don't want to share their registry).

Thanks!

Heh, but Stars! isn't open source so I can't just warm up my compiler and have a go at it (wishful thinking! Cool ) - so what do you mean with linux native???

Rather than going with a regular Stars! installation, I tend to install Wine, download 2.6jrc3, copy over stars.ini from another installation, and go from there. No baggage from a win installation, which may or may not help.

Install wine as a linux native installation, assuming that there is NO windows installation available.
After wine is installed modify the configuration file to reflect your installation and desired drive specifications.

Create a directory for your stars programs, and install the stars26jrc3.exe in this directory, and then run stars using wine.

That is what we mean by linux native. It is the wine installation we are referring to.

you can modify [fonts] in the config file.
you will also most likely want to change the [Managed] line to "no" and the [Desktop] to an appropriate size in order to mimic the windows behaviour of pop-ups.

Okay, set up wine to NOT use an existing windows installation but to run as linux native - that did it! (although I also installed version 2.6)

Now that's really nice... I still don't see the fleets of my opponents yet, but my crappy scanners are the reason for that!! Very Happy

Thanks for all your help!! Smile

I've been looking at this myself, but getting nowhere. Could you post a sample ?

[fonts]
;Read the Fonts topic in the Wine User Guide before adding aliases
;See a couple of examples for russian users below
"Resolution" = "96"
"Default" = "-adobe-helvetica-"
"DefaultFixed" = "fixed"
"DefaultSerif" = "-adobe-times-"
"DefaultSansSerif" = "-adobe-helvetica-"

I change the resolution to suit my tastes. Depending on your installation you may want to experiment with the defaults...

The above works for me.

Hmmm. That's exactly the same fonts settings that I have.

When you view the scorecard (F10), are the slanting player names readable for you ?

Hey Staz,

You probably need to change the Resolution value. You're not using the same graphics equipment as Kang, probably. I noticed while playing around with the fonts settings that changing the Resolution away from 96 made the slanted fonts unreadable (for me). If you have a smaller than 1152 Pixel wide screen, go for a lower value like '90' (guessing here, I'm no expert in this). Or higher, depending.

BTW, if you do a 'find / -name fonts.alias' (or look for fonts.scale), you'll find the abbreviations of known fonts on your system there. Here's my fonts settings:
"Resolution" = "96"
"Default" = "-adobe-helvetica-"
"DefaultFixed" = "-lucidasans-10"
"DefaultSerif" = "-adobe-utopia-"
"DefaultSansSerif" = "-URW-Gothic L-"

Stars only seems to care about the Default font and the SansSerif one. Gothic looks great for Stars, although at the default resolution the characters are very small in panes and dialogs (raising Resolution solves this, but creates the "F10-Problem" Confused).

Have fun,

Jan

I didn't think I had changed the FONT settings with this distribution, and yes the player names are slanted and readable for me with those settings.

The things I do remember changing (besides the drive specifications and paths):

; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
;"Managed" = "Y"
; Use a desktop window of 640x480 for Wine
"Desktop" = "942x707"

Or has been pointed out you can use:
"Managed" = "N"

This sets my desktop window to a size just less than my screen size (1024x768), allowing room for my status bar and 1 row of icons.

A quick update on using Wine to run Stars! on Linux...

Wine now uses a registry rather than a config file, and so all the old tips about changing fonts in the config file no longer work.

I found a suggestion at http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Fonts to download and install an open source version of the arial font family which worked for me...

cd /home/[username]/.wine/drive_c/
wget http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/arial 32.exe
wine arial32.exe /Q

2006 -> 2018. Sorry in advance, but this is the only thread on fonts I can find so if anyone ever searches they'll look in the right place. If I'm affected someone else will be.

I had been getting issuse with very poor fonts in Stars!. The solution for me was to

1) Copy the fonts from C:\windows\fonts to /home/user/.fonts (if you dual boot). Alternatively you can use winetricks. Look under default wine prefix to install the default font base.

This wasn't enough by itself. For some reason font smoothing doesn't seem to be enabled by default in Wine. So under winetricks go into change settings and enable font smoothing.

Congratulations you are no longer blind Cool because of ugly Wine/Stars! fonts. Laughing
