I'm currently hosting my fifth game on Autohost, but this is the first time that I've seen this error. I know that Ron will look into it when he gets a chance, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me a heads-up on what may cause such an error. Here's the text of the e-mail message:

Automatic message from Stars! AutoHost.
Stars.exe reported an error when generating the turn in your game. This email is being sent to you and Ron. Your game has been set on SYSTEM HOLD (game web page will not be updated) until Ron can look into the problem.

This means that when I ran stars.exe with a command line options -g -l to do a turn gen and logging, the last line of the log file said "FAILURE".

The .chk file (-v command line) indicated no .x file corruption. On a hunch, I did a -v using JRC4 and it said that .x11 was corrupt. I then did a -g -l using JRC4 and it generated just fine, but skipped .x11 as corrupt.

Its possible that player 11 may be attempting to utilize the JRC3 hex-edit bug that allows for free population creation.

I have switched the game to use JRC4 to gen turns and removed the SYSTEM HOLD. It has generated a turn. If player 11 complains, feel free to restore a previous turn from the 5 backup turns you have available to you in Host Utility.

I recommend that all hosts use JRC4 to generate turns. In fact, I *should* make JRC4 the default...

Thanks for the help Ron, and thanks for the fast action! I figured you'ld be "off" for the weekend, and didn't expect to get this resolved until at least Monday.

I'll plan to use JRC4 for any future games that I host. It seems that JRC3 and JRC4 can use the same game files. So I guess I don't need to have everyone update to JRC4. Is this true?

JRC4 is only *needed* on the host side. It doesn't help players at all.

I'm not sure if game files generated by JRC4 can be read by JRC3 or not. I wouldn't recommend going back to JRC3 after generating with 4.

Simple things like this I can do from home. Smile

OK Ron, thanks again. I'll send my players an e-mail to let them know what's going on, and I'll be sure to include a link to this thread.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Smile
