Hi,

I'm hosting a STARS!-Game (year 2427); all the players are using the version 'i'. I want them all to update their software to 'j', because I want to give the game to the AutoHost. Are there any problems for the host (me) or the players updating the software while the game is already running?

Ciao.

S.

I've done this once...IIRC all you need to do is generate a new turn with vJ(rc3/4) from the vI turn files and its done. Appropriate backups in case & the players will all need Jrc3/4 afterwards of course.

I'd wait to do the autohost thing until you're sure its all going smoothly(a turn or two).

Thank you.
But ####, it doesn't work.
I made it today as Gible described in his answer.
But two of the players get an error: The german message says 'Das Volk hält mich für einen Tyrannen!'; in english: 'The people think you are a tyrant!' The consequences are similar as when two players are using the same IDs, but the players do not have the same IDs, this is sure.
What happened here?
Someone out there with an answer?
Help!

Stolen codes. I have a whole bunch of them. They work fine for vI but have been blocked in vJ. If the codes in question really were purchased then you'll have to haggle with Mare Crisium/Jeff I guess.

Yup. But that would trigger the copy protection with vI too.

Oh, that's very interesting, Ashlyn...
Because one of the both players bought the STARS!-CD a few years ago for 100 DEM (about 50 EUR or 50 USD) in a shop - legal!
Very strange...
Very annoying... Confused

It is very annoying!!!

I had the same thing happen many years ago, when Autohost switched to something (a patch?). All of a sudden, in the middle of my game, I had freedom fighters refusing to move, selling my minerals, and asking for my unique serial number. And it was VERY embarrassing to have the same serial # as one of my players - as I was HOSTING the game... He was also in the Netherlands (but I didn't know him).

So I guess the point I'm trying to make is this:

Just because someone is having problems with their unique serial # does not automatically mean that they are a cheap jerk and somehow got a pirated serial number....
.....there are people out there that BOUGHT what they thought was a legitimate Stars! CD and unique serial number and it turns out there are duplicate CDs running around.

Just keep an open mind Nod

Edit: reread the autohost page. May 14, 2000, AutoHost IS NOW USING 'J' RC3 patch to generate turns. - this may have been it Wink
