Okay, I've sent mine in. Sorry it took so long; wasn't quite sure I wanted to jump straight into a game w/ a brand new race that I've never played a few turns w/. Wink

Well don't worry too much again... An old friend of mine is joining, if it's okay... He's coming back on the 9th... Or so.. . Though it said he might be able to get a hold of a PC before then.. I've emailed him everything he needs. He's played only 1 game that I know of.. SO this is probably just right for him. (He and I played a coop game over email few years back.)

I've gotta test my race again.. I mean, I'm not even sure I can play it! I've made so many mutations to it... Sheesh!

Now up to 6 players with races in (although there still might be a race or two with modifications pending).

I'm not quite sure when or with how many players Captain Maim is going to close the game (I'd suggest limiting it to 8 or at most 9 for medium normal).

Isn't race design part of the fun? I tend to tinker on and off for months before finding an race I'm happy to take into a game (I like some unusal races though).

Anyway, from what I've seen, it doesn't look like anyone is going to go into the game with what I'd consider an 'broken' race - they all look pretty playable.

I think that this is enough... Seven sounds just fine to me... I wound't go past 8... Just in case anyone was wondering...

Note: Map2XY decided to argue that my modifications to the map are rediculous and it further argued that it wouldn't (for reasons unknown) go past planet 2.. Inspite of using a fresh map. Sad Though I got the whole .map file done. So sad.

If you think there is a bug with Map2XY, let me know the details, and I'll look into it. Starting .xy and .map files and modified .map file would be nice too.

Okay... Thanks to Leit.. I've got a working alphabetized sector map. It's kinda funny to see bunchs of planets all clustered around with the same starting letters.. All the A's in one corner and C's in another and so forth.

Anyway, if we wanted to do that It's now easily doable.

Soon... I've got an 8th person who's interested... I'm not aditting anymore than 8.. 8/6 people... Wow... One player doesn't return until the 9th... I hope that's not a problem.

Anyone think 8's too many?

This game's going to be really crampt at 8.. ~400ly between HW's... I've done it before, but hehe... Boarder disputes and or negotiations are probably going to occure rather rapidly. Good news is, tech trading will be much easier at ~400ly... Smile

Arrggghhhh ... It' won't let me edit the post I'd created as a 'placeholder' (either the post is too old, or there is some other problem), so I'm reposting it at the bottom. We now have a seventh player.

I'm not sure when you want to start the game, but please at least allow enough time for the new player to respond (if he chooses) to race feedback.

If you think your name should be on the list below (but isn't), please let me know ASAP (in which case we have a problem ...). I haven't been very organized the last few days.

============================================================ ============================

I'm quite happy for people to send a race, then later send a race to replace it (possibly in response to feedback), as long as you are clear on which one is the 'current' one. Stars! can be such a huge investment of time that it's worth taking time to get a good race.

Races received:
1. Cerindil
2. Captain Maim
3. miklem
4. yoey
5. Woody
6. c64
7. ADG_Wraith
8. lord_of_chaos
9. Faithful

Some of the people that have sent races are revising their races and will re-send them.

NOTE: It's offical - you only need to send races to me, not Captain Maim (although you still reserve a game slot through him).

There is a time limit on editing posts. Can't remember it right now, it's a week or 10 days or so ...

You can always ask a moderator of the particular forum to edit your post.

Thanks for that - I thought it might be the problem. I imagine people will read the new posts on the thread, and I've emailed each player anyway.

It would be nice for someone setting up a game to have a much longer time limit on the first post so the list of changes/players could be in one place, but I imagine the forum software doesn't allow for that.

I don't want anymore than 8... my test games (with 8 players in a medium normal galaxy) tell me that the map's REALLY CRAMPT!

Hmm... I don't remember talking to KAI. I had an 8th player previous hmmm... Anyone up for a slight size increase???? Or a 2nd game? being created? Split off some of the players?

You said "~400ly between HW's", right? That's not crampt! Smile
Try a small dense with 12 players (in my last case 4 teams of 3), that's less than 200ly between HWs. And that's not crampt either! That's FUN! Nod

Point taken... I suppose it depends on the sprawl requirements of your race... I don't remember it being crampt last time I played ~9 players in this size universe but it might have been dense instead of normal.. I'm not sure.

Wow, 200 Ly is pretty close. But if you shared a border with an ally, that helped trmendously. Adding a safe side and increasing the volume of controled area.
We will not have the advantage of predetermined allies in our newbie game. With that said, i dont feel that ~400 Ly is too close. On teh other hand, I would be willing to bump up the system to Dense. As it is with 8 players, there will be an average of ~36 planets when divided eqaually. Dense would yeild ~45 planets. It would also increase the amount of development that would occur before space became confined. I am a "beginner" and if my calculations are wrong, please correct. In my opinion this goes with the spirit of a beginner game.
Changing density might mean people need to review their races, but i'm not in a hurry to start.

Nope, you are unique (as far as I know). I just looked through the emails and thought I'd missed you out, so added you again. My mistake.

From Faithful (Player Cool April 10th, 2006:

"I just got back home today! But I'll set up stars on my computer
tomorrow after class and do whatever things I need to to become ready
to play :)"

I'm okay with a little more time, I'm really close to finishing, I was almost finished, but Madman made a nice comment which calls for some more. *ahem* "Expensive Testing!" I'll run a few more games on my race to see what I can do by year 50. (I'm not using a max minerals map I'm not sure but I think benchmarks are to be done on max mins... Is that right? Oh well, seems closer to field expirence this way.)

I don't think it makes any sense to benchmark on max minerals unless you are involved in some sort of silly competition about who can get the most resources by year X.

There might be some standard benchmarks, but I try and set up something close to the game conditions - often I use tiny normal, as it gives me a few less planets as I expect to get in a game, which gives me a nice boost when the game goes better than the playtest.

Oh! Okay. Then I'm glad I didn't practice on Max mins Very Happy

So... What your saying is people actually GET 25k at year 50 WITHOUT MAX MINS? Shocked Whoa...

It's a good thing I'm not playing against THOSE people... Again... (I'm so glad Zoinker explained up front what "Intermediate" means in Stars! I thought it meant, "You know enough about the game to beat the AI." ROFL No wonder I got slaughtered every single time I played. I was joining all the wrong games!!! Rolling Eyes Laughing Thanks Madman! That really clears up my misconceptions. <Shakes head>

I think the game is full (just waiting on one person that Captain Maim has reserved a place for), but he's the arbiter of that, not me (I'm not hosting, just checking the files).

By all means send a file and I'll look at it - if the game is in fact full, perhaps you could be considered 'first reserve' in case anyone drops out before the game starts?

Yeah, the last slot's been taken.

However, if you'd like to be contacted in case of a dropout that'd be handy.

Or... I could host Hex I 1/2 or something. (or someother name, I don't know why the game's called "Hex I")

I'd be happy to host a split off from this if needed. What's your preference? Replacement, Or first on a split off (Zoiker DID say he'd split off a second game if interest was enough.)
