I just joined the too many stars game, it is about to start today.
The request from the host is to get in with JRC4. However as I’ve seen JRC4 is foreseen for 2.6 shareware version. I have 2.7 retail. For this is only JRC3. I saw a comment about Autohost supporting JRC4. does it mean I cannot play with it on 2.7 JRC3?
If no then any hint about running JRC4 – after I put it into my stars folder (containing already 2.7 JRC3) and re-gened the race I got problems with opening this new race file. The same appeared with race re-gened under 2.7 JRC3 afterwards. I figured out the problem appears if I change the race name. Any idea about this?
If yes – can I use 2.7 JRC3 while others will use 2.6 JRC4?

JRC3 and JRC4 are completely compatible.

JRC4 has server-side(host) bug fixes only.

2.7 and 2.6 are also completely compatible with each other. The differences are entirely cosmetic. A different splash screen, and 2.7 has sound effects in the battle viewer I believe.

Personally I use 2.6jrc4

from the rgcsFAQ :-

3.1 - Known Bugs in Stars JRC3

Race File Corruption:
If you edit the race name in a race file (then it) can cause the file to become corrupt.
This is especially common when making the race name shorter than before.
To get around this, when editing the race name, either edit it one letter at a time (saving and re-opening each time) or copy the race data into a new file by hand.

I think ALL j versions are compatible, but not 2.7i.

I think it is not always necessary to go to this much trouble.

See Academy forum, Known Bugs (JRC3), renaming races.
