Thanks for the sample. One outside cluster has just 12 planets others look like more than double that amount.
How much variation in the number of outside planets per player can we expect?

The clusters will all be equal. With 8 players, roughly 12 planets each seems about right.
That's a rough estimate based on pulling things out of my hole. Mileage may vary.

Now I have to regret mentioning 12 as that was an anomaly. Sad
Those are not likely 12 habitable planet. Some players might get a bad draw. Think all the other clusters were in the twenties maybe some even in low thirties.
After your head comes up for air can you provide a number within plus or minus some number. IE 20 +-3

How will the additional stretching affect the distance between the clusters and the central 'bucket'? Right now, the distance is 100 - 130 LYs between the respective rims. Can you let us know what it will be then?

The work you're putting into this is much appreciated!

Hi!
Just a short note on no-comm: please consider giving _some_ info on how the game proceeds, or else you may get a runaway monster that will spoil game for all other players.

Iztok, considering my current game, I absolutely understand your point. I am, however, hesitant to do more than perhaps list rank order every 10 years. I think that could be a thing to do - it would hopefully keep enough anonymity to allow people to know who's on top, but not necessarily why.

As for the planet distribution, I work rather incredibly hard to ensure that the spread of planets immediately nearby each player's HW are representative of the galaxy. Therefore the only way to get a 'bad draw' in my games (and it has happened) is if your hab range is so specific that when I scope the entire galaxy from your planet's perspective at Year 1, there are only a handful of greens. Again, it has happened, but I stand by my effort to try my best.

In case you haven't read my treatise on game building, I do actually scan the entire galaxy, and then view it from the aspect of each player's HW. Then I move the planets within a specific range of each player's HW to be representative of the galaxy. I have moved as many as 10 planets in a single area, in order to get a spread that worked equally for everyone. Game prep for me takes a while.

Taking into consideration what you have said about working to ge a fair planet distribution, I would tend to disagree with Iztok. If the luck of the (planet-) draw is eliminated, I would regard a 'runaway monster' not as spoiling the game for me, but rather as proof that the player concerned is better than I am.
Those monsters which do not require overly much skill to design and play (JoaT without NAS; CA; -f HE) are banned. If somebody builds a monster that manages to outstrip the other seven players, he has probably spent a lot of thought and time on race design, on testbedding and on micromanagement during the game. Why rob him of the fruit of his labours by alerting the rest of the universe to his status?
Finally: If the other players do not find out that someone is running away with the game, this would seem to indicate a serious deficiency in scouting efforts. (Though of course the monster may have already gained a decisive advantage by the time one meets him. In that case, I would again say that he has played a good game.)

Cheers, Matt

Still in.

Could we please have an updatedt (stretched) sample universe, so we can judge the distances involved in the real game?

I'll play if it is single-player no-comms. No time for lengthy chats while I'm still in another game... Totally fine if you do a different setup, don't let me spoil the fun!

Okay I'll do a thorough sample and upload it presently!

And yes, it'll be a single game, non-comm.

I'm actually laughing because PV2018 has had VERY long legs. I'm taking it as a compliment that 12 people haven't dropped in over 80 turns!

Great!
Could we have a copy of the bitmal you use with Universe Creator as well. If you let us know what factor you then use for stretching, it would take the guesswork out of setting up testbeds...

80 turns sounds good! Let's go!

Friendly bump Smile

Also, I was wondering what could be done to make AR more viable. Would a rule like "Kill starbase orders may not be used against AR" be acceptable? That would still leave them quite vulnerable, but at least with some chance of defending themselves...

Is there still room for another?

I haven't played stars in 2 years or so. I come back today to check the forums and see a new game about to start. Too tempting.

Apologies for the delay in responding, let me tackle a few questions at once.

Still excepting files for the game, go ahead and send them to the email address in my first post. Maximum is still eight, we only have four players signed up so far.

Little Eddie
Mogs
Jools
Romeo

Also, I've had a request to turn on random events. I think it's unbalanced my last game, however if a majority of players want it turned on then who am I to argue?

I'll set up a poll presently and upload the Bitmap.

Still was interested. Was kind of waiting to see if there was updated info of universe setup before sending final race design.

Definitely still interested. But same thing: Is there any more info about the universe forthcoming (see my previouse mails)? It would be helpful to know more about the distances involved when fine tuning the race.

Cheers, Matt

I do like random events, even if I was on the wrong side of a wormhole in PV2018 Smile

Can you give an estimate of planet count in the local clusters? 12 sounds low-ish, the file you sent around earlier had about 24 I think?
