So, I went and got a CS degree so that I could work on a stars clone. Rolling Eyes Apparently I took too long because I don't see many recent posts. I would like to contribute to an existing project (rather then start over an suffer the fate of starting and not finishing). Any one have thoughts or comments?

As far as I know Stars! Nova is (or was) the project with the largest number of developers, as well as the project closest to something usable, so you might look here: http://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=thread&fr m_id=137&rid=406.

Unfortunately it has been a year since anyone posted there, and a year and a half since the Stars! Nova team last released a download.

Maybe you can find another use for your new skill set while you try to get the Nova team back together?

I know a place that's hiring. You'd have to move south though.

howdy y'all,

i was hoping that the jeffs would sell the rights to the code to someone who would go open source with it. if that aint gonna happen, then perhaps the stars!nova folks would open source their code on github or some other such site.

as i've said in another thread, i would pay $50 or $100 to get the code for stars! open sourced. even if it's crufty [and it likely is [*grin*]] having the algorithms would be so very nice. [*sigh ...*]

i would likely pay $25 to open source stars!nova ...

take care,
lee

@skoormit: Thanks for the tip, but I went to the west coast instead of south... Can't say I regret missing that cold spell you guys got the last few months! Smile

I think I will put some time into figuring out the development environment (on a mac) and determining if there is some sort of viable plan.

Maybe not too late. After a long period of absence, I downloaded Stars and got it running painlessly under Wine!

It was harder to get logged in on this forum which seems to object to Linux/Chrome, but I managed to get it to work under Firefox.

I actually looked up Stars again as I'm in the early stages of writing my own 4x space game as a little hobby and started to reminisce.

I'm still amazed that people are still playing this game some 20 years on!

And you know what is scary? When I was asked for my activation serial, I still remembered it! Embarassed

There are a few games left, so I'll keep it going. Welcome back, and good luck on your game programming!

I've been looking through the projects on various forums on github and sourceforge and there seems to be a large number of projects that had some good momentum though have died after a year or two. With games like Endless Space (which add's "heroes" to the mix) and the various Masters of Orion incarnations, there seems to be a lot of places for people to invest their time in and not much in the way of keeping projects like this going.

I wish I had more time to invest into maintaining Stars!Clone projects, though since that isn't as much of an option right now keeping the fun with the original stars alive and providing input with Wine Ports/Wiki/VM installs seems to be a good application of my time.

Anybody else still working on projects like this? Possibly even going as far as to try out HTML5-based games? I've had a project idea like this on the back burner for some time. I tend to start a lot of things I don't finish so i've been waiting till I can get that tackled before I proceed with starting it.

I've historically been poor at finishing projects I start as well. I had started a Java based stars clone way back when. Since I started playing again I started porting it to an html5/web application. It's very back burner for me currently. As I get further along in my career I've become a lot better at finishing personal projects though. Maybe after my current project is complete I'll get more serious about it.
