Aggregate any split orgies, exclude overpop fleets...

I wonder how many additional LFs you were making each year to ensure no overrun!

Ahem... 5000 superfreighter full of pop?

What for so many?

Well, for full 300% overpop on about 100 worlds around 200 million are required in orbit to maintain overpop. If you want an orgy-accompanied fleet to be able to popdrop one world to 300%-hold every turn, it needs a capital of about 75-100 million pop (for a fully defended 100% world, there's 4 million battle deaths, and then another 6 million to fill the planet to 300% and split off a maintenance orgy). Half a dozen of those plus the 200 million worth of maintenance orgies in-being makes about 800 million that's perfectly useful. One would assume some of them got out of control and he decided to store them up (perhaps to split into new orgy fleets, in case some of the existing ones were destroyed?) rather than dump the population.

Kind of got out of control..

I was overpopping (not to 300% though) widely, but the orgy just kind of exploded....

I had also just acquired the Jump Gate, so was planning on doing some serious pop spreading - although I'd have still needed up with rather a lot of pop in a single (safely deep field) orgy.

I've never played IS... I think.

And never imagined that pop can get to such astonishing numbers... definetly impressing.

Compound interest is awesome...

Even at a miserly 9.5% (half of a typical 19% PGR) a single kT of colonists will result in 8,738kT of colonist in 100 years.

But we don't tend to start with just 1kT, and we certainly do continue to make 'deposits' for a while...

Withdrawals can be quite large as well. Taking out a well defended IS planet with 3M populations takes (75% deaths, 2*defense bonus) 24M pop PLUS whatever you want to stay on the planet...

Of course bombers/packets are very useful addition. But I could have been doing that each year and just sending the freighters back for more... Starship Troopers...

Not quite 24 million. Defences are <100% even before the 25% that gets a free pass. More like 21 million vs. Planetary Shields. Even a 3.3M planet with Neutron Shields only takes 23 million.

I will note, though, that for the cost of the 800 Super Freighters carrying the pop needed to grow 23 million a turn, you could build 2 fleets of 121 B-52 Cherry Bombers (this being the magic number to kill 100% of population through Neutron Shields) and still have a fair bit left over for a 2M/turn orgy fleet attached to each.

I was guessing the 1.1 attack bonus, OBRM, and doing rounding in my head - but thanks for the numbers. Are those weapons costs for IS (do bombs cost extra, can't recall - they just cost what they cost as I build them) Somewhat different costs in terms of Bor though (my SFs use none)

But yes - bombers are a very good option at that stage.
It's only really an issue when tackling an entrenched IS though - most people don't overlap (so 1M defensive troops) and they don't get the 2* bonus either.

So you end up dropping 5M pop, and that's a lot easier to regrow than 23M...

Actually, I forgot the 1.1. Laughing So it's more like 19M with Planetary Shields and 21M with Neutron Shields.

OBRM is largely cancelled out by dieoff. An OBRM 300% hold is 3,036,000; the other 264,000 is only there between freighter growth and planetary growth.

IIRC (and according to Posey's spreadsheet) bombs don't cost extra for IS. However, they don't get Smart Bombs.

EDIT: Also, note that I used the absolute brute-force numbers for bombers required. The two-player bombing tactic reduces the number of B-52s to absolutely guarantee a planet wipe from 121 to 22 (19 LBU-74 bombers guarantees 100% installation kill against an OBRM JoaT HP, 3 Cherry bombers for the higher player number gets 100% pop kill). The lesser finesse required and the preservation of factories/mines may still make an offensive orgy worth it, though, outside of the "overpopped IS" worst-case scenario.

The 5M pop per planet is achievable (i.e. the intact capture of an enemy plant)
The 20+ is less so.

But of course as IS there is a tendency not to be HP, so there is some milage in scorched earth capture...

A very strong tendency. Going from HG to HP for a normal OBRM race (while keeping points steady) typically takes you from about 3k to 4k max res per 100% planet (3.6k to 4.8k for JoaT), which is an increase of ~33%. For an IS it takes you from about 4.1k to 4.5k, which is an increase of a measly 10%.

That said, mines are still useful to preserve no matter your setup, and HG certainly like intact factories even if it's not as crucial as for HP.
