Would you join a Duelling Club?[ 25 votes ]
1. Yes 21 / 84%
2. No 3 / 12%
3. Yes--no--I don't know--I logged on here by accident! 1 / 4%

One further down mentioned the idea of duelling an advanced player. I am wondering how much interest there would be in forming a Blitz Duelling club here. Those of you who are concerned about player rankings would finally have a way to score yourselves. Here's how I propose it would work:

1. Only two players per game.
This way there is a clear-cut winner.

2. Games are hosted by one or the other player.
This is so they can play by direct email instead of tying up a slot on Autohost. This allows them to blitz if they so desire and to finish a game as rapidly or as slowly as they wish.

3. Both players must report results to the central clearing house (probably a location here on the Forum). This way if you win, you get a confirmation from the loser that you did. This might open up a can of worms, but we've got to have a certain level of trust among our peers. Honesty will be the best policy, and abuse of the reporting will be investigated (by me perhaps?).

4. Victory reports must be accompanied by a screen snapshot showing the in-game message: "The XXXXX have been declared the winner..."
This means that at the initial game creation a Victory Condition must be set and the game must be played to that specified Condition. No surrenders here. If you're not willing to play to the end of a game, don't start it.

5. If a player resigns from a game, he loses by default.
I'm not sure how to verify this yet (ideas?).

6. Players would be ranked in terms of number of games played divided by number of games won. The format would look something like this:

Player A: Games played: 5 Games won 3 Win%=60
Player B: Games played: 8 Games won 2 Win%=25
Player C: Games played: 10 Games won 3 Win%=33

7. Posting details about individual games is up to the players.
This way it doesn't bog down the rankings with other stats like PRT or specific game conditions.

8. As this is a duelling club, players would be expected to comport themselves as gentlemen (or ladies - are there any women playing Stars these days?).
Be respectful, take your losses (and your wins) with a modicum of professionalism, and don't cheat. This could be a lot of fun for everyone involved.

Thoughts on this?

Yes, at least one that I know of, and she is hosting several games as well. 'Ashlyn' is her host handle, but don't think she's registered here on the forum.

I'm totally game for this. I love blitz games, I love duels. I like games with the simple 1 vs 1. Diplomacy is good and all but how many gmaes have become boring by everyone being friendly to everyone right up until nubians?

Hell I'd love to set up this kinda thing. In fact if EDog (or anyone else) is interested PM me and maybe we can talk about starting this sort of thing up.

I think a better ranking system would work in a 2 number format. Firstly by games won, secondly by games played.

e.g. player a - rank 3/10 (3 games won, 10 played)
player b - rank 3/4 (3 won, 4 played)
player c - rank 0/14 (none won, 14 played)

As such A would be of higher rank then b, and b higher than c. The idea of using percentage of wins is good but if someone played one and won one he'd be 100% and therefore top rank.

Thoughts?

I was thinking that challengers would look at all three stats. Someone who's got a 100% win ratio and has played one game is not necessarily an amazing player. Someone who's got a 40% win ratio and has played 50 games is probably pretty good. The percentages will tell over time who is really a better player.

Your fractions are basically the same thing without the % sign. I just like percentages, but like any good Corellian, I have no use for the odds.

Fair point. I think what might be a good idea to start with is to get enough people together to form a knock-out-tournament (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc...) and then ask Ron really nicely if he'll set up a game forum for us and then everyone involved can blitz their appropriate opponents selected at random or on a challenge basis knocking out every other person until 2 guys remain who have each defeated everyone else and play for the championship. All this would be done by e-mail so as to save Ron' precious (and very small from what I gather) free time.

Ron has lots of free time. That is why he started this new forum.
He hardly had anything to do on the old forum. No ranking, very little posting...
His dream came true when he switched to this new forum. http://home.earthlink.net/~cosmic906/_uimages/5.gif

All three works for me. Cool

Um I'm not sure if this happens or what are there any like TEAMS around here? Where one team challenges another that sort of thing? Ranking there would be cool too. Rolling Eyes

I'd go with fractions, since most people who play Stars! can do basic division (yes I know it takes more time but still). How does one snap a screen shot of anything in windows. Like what key is default. (I have a funky Sony keyboard) Resignation would be simple, the player submits a loss to the administration. This can be secured with, passwords? Blah, maybe just by Email names. Nana nana bubu I just know I won't be doing the work, only playing the games.

print screen should be one of the buttons either coupled with, or just above your 6 keys on the right - insert, del, home, end, pg upand pgdown. Mine is used by hitting ALT+SYSRQ.

Snap a screen shot? Have you tried Canon? They have a line of digital cameras. Very Happy There should be a "PrtScrn" on your keyboard. If it is funky, you might have to clean it first. ROFLMAO The PrtScrn puts the captured screen in a buffer. Now you can make/open a bitmap image or a program that handles graphics and "paste" the buffered information. If it is bitmap image save it as .JPG instead of .BMP to reduce filesize in case you want to email it as an attachment.

Ah, it works. I have to hold down the unique FN within a square key and then hit Print Screen/Sys Rq??? then right click my new paint document to open as paint(XP uses image preview thing not paint default). Need to change Windows settings Twisted Evil .
Idea
We should have a dueling forum, one where you can be evicted for spam, like another forum only post able by people in the dueling club, kind of like a game forum. The leader could post announcements and rankings up in a topic like the admin announcements. So we send him the stuff(WINNING PICTURES) he add our ranks, maybe keeps a message up for everyone and edits it when they've played a game. (hey I'm trying to think of ways to do this on the existing forum)

Slightly possible: their should be a separately registrable(as in member register) dueling forum so not everyone can post there?

That does bring up the point, if they were turns played quickly but only a couple hours every week. Like 5-10 minute turns but only for a couple hours, then both players retire to finish the game in a week or two.

I would accept team games as legitimate duels. Here's my suggestion on how to score them:

Winning team members receive a "2/3" ranking each instead of a "1" for a win. This would be because the victory must be split. I know it works out to 4/3 (for a team of 2). This is my way of showing that in a team victory, the power of the team is greater than the sum of its parts (ooo, pretty deep for a Sunday afternoon!).

Thoughts on this?

Ranking will solely be based upon wins/losses. If we start tracking universe size, PRT, grooming, or any other qualities the ranking becomes impossibly complicated (or at least more so than I want to track).

And what's so dumb about a small or medium universe? A small universe works very well in a 2-person game. There's enough room to expand without needing massive micromanagement. Distances are far enough that you need to consider things like gates and fuel consumption, but close enough that you can find your opponent before eight years have passed. Would you rather duel in a Tiny universe or are you looking to blitz in a Large/Huge setting (and have no job, family, or life to look after)? Or were you just joshing us?

"Blitz" is a pretty subjective term, especially when you consider there are some major differences in time zones between players (Freakyboy is +7 hours on me, and I had him up past 2 AM the other night and keep your dirty thoughts to yourselves!).

I've removed the "blitz" name from the duelling club. The idea is mostly for games to take place outside of the auspices of Autohost so players can generate turns as frequently as they want.

If you want to spend two hours a day on it, you'll grow in rankings pretty quickly (unless you suck!).

But I do suck.... meh.
I've been scouring for old automatic turn sending devices. Have also made myself look very stupid on the Google forums(well as soon as my posts go up Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed ) Perhaps if a good one (fully automated) is found then we can use it as a standard (so no one has to MM all the turn stuff because someone else has no turn sender)

I think that the people most LIKELY to do BADLY in duelling are the pros. Mainly because they'll try something new and different, which often wont pay off.

Actually, I think that will be a benefit to all. It's easy to fall into the habit of playing the same race or the same three races in every game. I've been playing Stars for more than four years and enjoy trying new and different concepts. Failing with them is as much a learning process as succeeding. In a duelling situation, where you don't have a lot of investment in a long-running, open-ended game, you might be more willing to step out of the box. All that can do in the long run is make better Stars players all around.
