Okay everyone, here is where we stand at the moment:

Six of the original twelve players are not marked as inactive. One of these players will continue to post their turns intermittently. From what I can garner of the universe many of us were crippled by the absence of our partners for most of the game and of those races that remain the outcome is starting to look like a foregone conclusion.

I am willing to fight to the very bitter end and just wanted to confirm that everyone else is still in this to the finish. If not, then we will have to decide what to do.

I look forward to everyone's responses.

I want to keep playing, but I think it will be best if everyone can do what they want instead of being limited to one partner (who might be inactive).

I agree with UAF. The original theme is pretty cool, but unfortunately the quantity of less dedicated players dropping out has undermined the concept beyond repair. I also agree with Furfuznel that the end at this point seems predictable.

I'm willing to keep playing (and to the best of my ability), but I'm equally willing to concede and start anew, because playing this game has become merely a matter of fulfilling my obligation, quite honestly. The Hand of Quiik can do a little bit of everything, but not much of anything. Quiik might be a good support partner for a winning partnership, but without a stronger ally than itself, it hasn't a prayer.

If the Traders and the UAF are allies I'd say they deserve the joint win that seems inevitable. I doubt that even in a free-for-all the two of them could be displaced as the eventual winners. Still, if the game goes on another 100 years, and with the right ally maybe Quiik's chances improve.

How about revealing all the partnerships, then voting on whether to continue on (possibly with modified rules), select a winner, or both. For my feelings the game has taught me a lot and has fulfilled it's original purpose.

Sounds good to me except for one thing! People will need to self announce their partnerships as the sheet of paper that the third party created with all of the partnerships listed has long since been lost I am sure.

I will send out an e-mail to everyone who played in this game and see what kind of response I get.

For anyone who cares to know my partner is Hyper - the Mighty Star Men, who surprisingly has not been totally eradicated yet, even though they have not submitted in more than thirty turns.

At least I can try and guess who all the partners were!

Lets see:
I know the Dazers and Phlemnoinds are partners.
I knew the Star men were allied with the Shaddallarange.
And the Harlequins with the Almucantars.
I believe the Hand are allied with the Gannoks.
And the Traders with the Mancuvians.

This of course, leave me with my allies, the Blobs. Smile

Hand of Quiik are indeed allied with the Gannoks.

I thought perhaps the Phlemnoids were the other part of the Star Dazer alliance.

The Trader/Mancuvian relationship surprises me, as does the UAF/Blobs relationship.

Since the Traders and the UAF are not allied as I believed, the eventual outcome no longer seems so clear.

OK I was the harlequins until I retired...

I was allied to the Examind - who disappeared early on.. leaving me without a partner. I was offered a partnership with the Hand... who at the time has pissed off everyone... including me. In fact the hand had taken a planet that we had agreed was mine - as such I took it back, Zoid (good man) was fine with this and didn't mind at all Smile

Which left me in dire straights... I could either ally with someone I'd just invaded and someone who was being bullied from all directions... or I could go it alone. I thought i'd try to go it alone... but I go nowhere fast. In a galaxy where (I thought) everyone had a partner... and I had none... and my once chance was gone......

So I bowed out.

Sorry guys Sad

You could at least arrange a replacment player...
And you were ranked 4, I was afraid of what might happen if you would start fighting everyone like you said you would.

I was ranked fourth... but it wasn't that far into the game and I had lots of space docks - which gives lots of points.

I did go on a run with my ships... but I lacked enough to get any decisive victories. The Mancunians?? or someone like that did a good job of holding my first couple of fleets back (hat off to them) - after that I realised I lacked the force to get far enough fast enough.

I was 4th... but not by a lot and not because of the right reasons.

I experiment with races too much. It's probably why I arse up so many games (my first duel... an AR, MDI - a bi-immune 12% AR without ISB, another game i'm still playing - a -f IT with expensive weapons and a few other oddities... in PiT I had expensive weapons tech, I was a JOAT... with TT... never ever ever again).

I should stick to easy tried and tested races... Zoid keeps banging on about tri-immune 6% (total) HE races.....

The only reason I mention the 3% tri-immune HE as often as I do is because that's primarily all my experience is limited to- it's all I know. I wouldn't say it's the race to play - I don't even consider playing one, anymore.

Although I do worse with everything else I've tried so far. Laughing

I suck.

Hi here is ccmaster , King of the Traders

My ally was the Mancuvian have only cost me resources bring me nothing .

about the game status at the moment . The game is over ....
If the UFA ally with me we have won the game . If they do not ally and wait untill i have mostly eliminate my minerals at the Stardanzers forces they have a good chance to win . Winning is not the most important thning for me so I normaly help new Players . BTW : When the game is over i will change my PW so that everyone can see my race and so on ...
I play a 3 immune He with 4%(8%) grow and max minerals and faktories . So i have at the moment over 500.000 of each mineral and can not build fast enouth ships that it goes down .

About the games setting :

the game idea was good but to many Players have left withour any reason or to give the PW . Maybe we can make a rematch with new races and Partners of the Players we now know not leave the game this may be more interresting then build now thouthands of Nubians and overrun someone .

so far for now

I actually like this idea quite a bit. I would be willing to play a rematch of the dedicated players with new race designs, a smaller universe, and this time no public player scores Embarassed (for at least seventy five years).

I also like the idea of starting a new smaller game.
Here's some ideas (singly or together):
1) Something like the Capture The Flag game, but smaller; i.e. 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3. Kind of like a duel, but with partners.
2) Having one intermediate/expert on each team for advice.
3) Team pre-game race design.
4) Smaller universe (earlier conflicts, quicker game)
Any other ideas?

I like that idea. I think that I will have to post that as a game idea even if there are not enough people here who are willing to get involved in a 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 (or even 2 vs 2 vs 2). Let me know if you would be interested in a game / duel of this sort.

Quote:

2) Having one intermediate/expert on each team for advice.

Although this sounds like a good idea I am not sure that we could find enough intermediate or expert players willing to join the game. If we could, all the better...

Quote:

3) Team pre-game race design.

This is one that I have thought about before but have always backed away from because I do not know enough about race design to know how to be helpful when creating races with a partner (or two). If there was enough interest I would probably agree to this.

Quote:

I definitely think that we would have to go with a smaller universe, or at the very least change it from dense to sparse. In all honesty though if we cut the total number of players down from twelve to six I could not imagine playing in a large universe as it would take forever to get anywhere and to fight.

One thing that I have found about some of the larger games I have been involved in (not many mind you) it often ends up being a race to Nubians and then it degenerates into a slug-fest. I would like a smaller universe in the hopes of creating hostilities earlier in the game.

What is everyone's feeling about playing a game without selecting Accelerated BBS play?

Personally, I live for the nubian era. Seems I'm a minority, but I don't mind the "do nothing until nubians" games, although I've never been able to escape a war by the time cruisers and BB's are out. I just don't find fighting with frigates, destroyers, and cruisers to be all that much fun. They're all so much the same, the hulls could have come pre-equipped with standardized equipment with no options at all, and it wouldn't be much more boring.

On second thought, I'm leaving.
I want diplomatic action, but with the current rules and so few players we can't really have that.

If the Traders and I were to keep playing, one of us would've won. With me leaving I think the Dazers will win the game, good job BTW, I think Star Daze played his economy better then anyone here. I think you can't work on diplomacy though Wink

Applause to the Traders too, in their LONG war against the Dazers they did very good too.

I'd like to discuss the race designs and why people did what they did throughout, so we can learn more.

Thanks for all the players for playing.

If the game is ending now (I've noticed practically everyone skipped the last turn) the Stardazers have won, and nobody deserves it more IMO. StarDaze has led the game from start and STILL remains in the lead, despite working alone against the whole galaxy. Good job, Stardaze. You've played well, and nobly.

Let us not diminish his victory by assuming someone else would win if continued. I do not agree that the Stardazers would have necessarily lost to the UAF or the Traders if the game continued; that remains to be proven. If the game continued (with free diplomacy or otherwise) anything could yet happen, but there is no obvious conclusion. I only thought the end was clear when I erringly assumed the Traders and the UAF were official partners.

The Stardazers and the Hand of Quiik are "amiable enemies" and have been communicating (although I have in no way aided him, and made my intent to attack him as soon as I am capable repeatedly known to him). Stardaze now is hampered by mineral shortages more than anything else, and that could easily be overcome for a very long period of time by many different means, several of which require either no fight or minimal fighting. He could also sweep over the large juicy and undefended Hand of Quiik empire - I have mineral abundance even on my poor planets, because I have good remote miners and have been collecting/saving my minerals for nubians which I STILL don't have (it'd be 10-15 more years before I could begin building nubians with W22 technology).

Of course, so could the Traders or The UAF, or even the Shadallrangers. One only needs to exercise the option to be ruthless. I'm such a juicy target I salivate at the thought of exterminating myself. Laughing

The only thing one can really conclude about the end result of this game at this point IMO (without playing it out) is that the Hand of Quiik is not in the running, and has never been. My evaluation of this race from the beginning told me it was hopeless - no wonder the creator quit. Rolling Eyes The only strength of this race (besides the wonderful stargates) is versatility. It's weaknesses is that it has no economic strength, no cheap (but lots of expensive) research, topped off with Generalized Research. I'm not sure what strategy the creator had in mind when he created this race. It's neither a quick starter or a sleeping giant. The only thing it could be good for IMO is a game of unfettered diplomacy as a support ally, which definitely puts it out of it's element in "Partners In Time", especially paired with an even weaker ally.

Ah well, if the players are starting to leave the sunken ship then I guess I can provide some insight into my race, my objectives, and possibly some of my decisions during the game.

To begin, my race:
PRT: InnerStrength (was apparently obvious to everyone)
LRT: NRSE, GR, IS, OBRM
HAB: Grav: 0.20 to 1.28, Temp: Immune, Rad: 13 to 59
17% Growth
Cheap Techs: Construction, Weapons, and Propulsion
Expensive Techs: Energy, Electronics, and BioTech

My Objectives!

Early in the game I started expanding South as quick as I could in an (what later proved to be feeble) attempt to join up with my partner (The Mighty Star Men) for Tech Trading. I soon ran into the UAF and had to form a border agreement with them so as not to get my butt blasted. Then I started pushing East and North. To the east I ran into the Traders and the Hand of Quiik (original owners). To the North I ran into the Harlequins. Nothing good came of the contacts to the east. At this time I also sent a colony ship through a wormhole in my space which took me to the far side of the Universe where I colonized a planet (which ticked off the StarDazers).

The contact to the North proved to be a good one as the Harlequins were feeling trapped in the corner of the Universe and wanted to intercolonize. Therefore, we set up an intercolonization deal that continued well after they left the game (of course it sucked having to slow my ships down to go through their minefield border all the time, but so be it).

The lack of foresight on my behalf in not taking Improved Fuel Efficiency really hurt my start to the game and I ended up getting pinned in by the UAF and Traders on my South side, the edge of the Universe on the West, and a hodge-podge of races to the north east.

Having ticked off the StarDazers by stalling leaving the planet that I had colonized at the end of the wormhole until I could build a starbase was all designed to force them to take some of their attention away from my partner who was getting kicked by the StarDazers at the time. The plan failed and I then had to defend against StarDaers coming back the other way through the wormhole.

From then on it was simply a matter of mismanaged minerals and wasted research efforts that prevented me from getting too far ahead. Then... I started selling ships. I must admit that this proved to be a big boost to my economy, especially coupled with selling planets to the Hand of Quiik for Maxi-miners, and taking out some of the Mancuvians planets. Still, the damage was done and I was trying to catch up from an enormous defecit.

Although at the time of this writing I am in 4th that is not a true representation of my status in the game. To put things into perspective the 3rd place Traders have a score 1.6 times mine! Shocked

The only thing I had going for me at the end of the game was that I had tachyon detector ships to sell, which meant that many races would not attack me while they were buying my ships.

I definitely learned an awful lot about the design of my race in this game and look forward to applying it to future races.

It looks like this is it. I must disagree with Zoid that I deserve the victory. Conversely, I think the game has ended (it has ended, hasn't it?) in a draw. It doesn't look like any of the partnerships are still intact and both submitting turns. This includes my own partner who appears to have left (I think) without a word (especially a password) to me. I plan on writing up a quick summary this weekend and posting it here.

Okay, I have decided that we might as well call the game over. I hope that everyone learned something Sherlock or had fun. Yey

I am starting a new game called Partners Back in Time in which people will be able to design their races with their partners and in which I promise there will be no public player scores for the first 100 years. Check it out in the new games announcements section.

My partner is still submitting. Did we win? Laughing

Here's race characteristics of Hand of Quiik:

PRT: IT
LRT: ISB, GR
1/4 habitat centered/equal, 17% growth
Economy: 1/1000, 11/9/11 (-g), 10/4/11
Research: En, El, Bio +75% / W, P, C normal
No points remaining

When I took over, I had no history file so all previous planet recon was lost. I was under seige by the Mancuvians and the Blobs, and to my SW the Stardazers were right up adjacent to my HW in strength, and unyielding in his refusal to allow any recon in that direction (all attempts were shot down). I had the Harlequins screaming about planets in the West that the original player had colonized and I figured the last thing I needed was another committed enemy, so I adopted a policy of placation towards him. I didn't argue about who the rightful owner of those planets should be and allowed him to take them over. For most of the game it was a matter of trying to get some reconnaisance in an already established world, beyond the point where most tolerate scouts in their assumed areas of ownership. The UAF, Traders, Harlequins, Shadallrangers (and of course the Gannoks) were tolerant of this effort - the Blobs, Mancuvians, and Stardazers did their best to thwart any recon.

I was too embroiled in defending the few planets I had when I took over to make much progress in expansion. I was successful in defending against the far superior Blobs (who were in 2nd place, and remained until they quit, I believe), but the effort was exhausting my limited resources leaving little for research or anything else. Moreover, they favored large numbers of inferior tech warships that seldom resulted in tech gains even though I always won the battles (that and the unskilled ship designs were why I always won). I even managed to snatch a couple planets from him in the meantime. The Mancuvians were merely an annoyance, harrassing skirmishes, keeping me on my toes, never allowing me to relax my guard in the North.

Then the Harlequins declared war and it was I that they attacked. Like the Blobs, I stopped his attacks cold too, and then suddenly, all my tormentors quit, all at once. It wasn't until then that I began to prosper and make headway. For the longest time I wasn't even keeping pace in the scoreboard with players who had already quit. In the end I was pacing myself against the Phlemnoids, watching as he gained slowly on me, then passed me, and then we exchanged positions back and forth, which is where we are now. I end in 5th place.

By the way, I think in the first week I began playing, I got a rather curious email - No return address, no traceable path, no signature, and only one word in the message body. "QUIT" Rolling Eyes
I always wondered about that.

I was going to wait until the weekend to do this, but with the game over I seem to have some extra time on my hands.

Contrary to some, this was my first PBEM and here are some of my thoughts. To anyone starting out, read the newsgroup & articles here and at other sites. It really helped me.

Race Design: Since the universe was large, I originally submitted an HP race. But when I testbedded, my expansion was slower than I wanted and I wasn't comfortable with it. I then got one of the IT races off of StarbaseDelta (a more standard HG race), tweaked it a little so it became a HG/HP hybrid, and got it submitted just in time.
PRT: IT
LRTs: IFE NRSE OBRM LSP NAS (yea, 5 LRTs!; what was I thinkin?)
Hab: Grav Imm, Temp 24-152, Rad 56-88
GR: 17%, 1 in 9
Economy: 1/1000, 12/8/18(g box checked), 10/5/17
Research: Weapons cheap, Const Normal, all others expensive

Race Strategy: Grab lots of territory. With the 1 in 9 hab, I really needed to expand fast. What I decided on was a very aggresive scouting plan where some of the scouts just went out to find other races and establish a border.

The Game: Started out with good "G" on main world, poor "G" on second world. Began scouting program - because of my scouting strategy, there were holes in my territory that I had to fill in later. Year 3; found a huge bonanza - an 87% world with good "G" that was only 40 ltyrs from my main world. Year 7; detected Hand of Quick ships, tried to establish a border, no response. By backtracking the ships I assumed their homeworld was on Bones and they were IT also(later verified). This put their main world only 250 ltyrs from my second world. Since I didn't want anyone to know how few planets I held in a large area, I adopted a policy of no scouting in my area. Although this really irritated some and caused some early wars, it seemed to work. Year 12; The Quick started sending some armed ships in my direction and my warnings were ignored so I established the Border Patrol to keep them out. Year 14; Saw some Blob ships, established a border, NAP, and eventually tech trading (didn't realize how powerful tech trading can be or I would have started it earlier). Next I ran into the Traders and established a border with them. Then I met the Star Men. I proposed a border, they countered, and I accepted. Soon they discovered how few worlds I had in the area, raised a stink, and declared that I must comply with a new border that I didn't find acceptable. Noticing that they were AR and having read that AR is weak early on, I decided to attack. After having pushed them back to the original border I tried to establish a trade agreement, but was met with some very offensive remarks (my hat's off the to host for sending out a very eloquent message on game ettiquete). Shortly thereafter the Star Men quit. About this time the Hand of Zoid appears and we have a few skirmishes over the border and the many attempts to send scouts into my territory. Finally we came to an agreement and didn't attack each other for the rest of the game. Then a long, long war with the Traders started. Boy, did they beat me up! I sure learned a lot. Things like don't accept a challenge to fight at one of his major worlds, bring bombers when invading, and watch out for beam ships with regen shields, amps, and flux caps -- ouch! There was one bright spot where I surprised them, retreat firing with about 25 ships against his 800+ ships. Worked for two years before they caught on. As the game was in the last five turns I detected (by way of an extremely expensive tachyon ship) a large UAF fleet(1300+ ships, most of them an older design) headed for one of my worlds. I gated in a large force the year they arrived and crushed them. Those tachyon ships earned their keep that year! Had trouble communicating with my partner, we just couldn't seem to get it together.

Race shortcomings: OBRM with 1 in 9 hab is bad! I partially compensated with lots of mining ships, over 1000 at the end of the game. I also learned that taking over inactive player's worlds provides a wealth of minerals.

Final words: My thanks to the host and all the players for a great game that showed me the difference between taking on the AI vs a real player. Maybe next time I won't have to be on the "Alliance of Despair". Smile
A special thanks to Zoid and FurFuznel for their very funny in-game messages. ROFLMAO
