Hey there everyone;

When I start up stars the opening Splash screen comes up with the New, Open, Continue, Exit Stars! button. Then when I open, continue, or start a new game and expect to be taken to the game screens Stars! disappears from my screen. I have to maximize it to get it to come back (every single time).

I have tried using the cascade command and the tile commands but that does not display the window. When I right click on it in my list of running programs at the bottom of the screen and choose move or resize the mouse cursor jumps to the top of the screen but will not move or resize the unseen window.

Once the window is maximized I can make it disappear again using the restore down icon in the top right of the window.

This problem only sprang up after I had been playing for a few months switching back and forth between two different user profiles on my Windoze 2k laptop. In one of these profiles the start bar is on the bottom and in the other it is on the top.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make my Stars! window appear without having to maximize it each and every time?

I don't know how to solve your problem but you could try to directly open the game by double clicking on the .m or .x files of your game (they need to be associated with Stars! first. For more info about that you can take a look at some of the answers in this topic in the Academy: Problem with Netscape and Stars! files)
This should bypass the splash screen, so it might also bypass your problem ...

Thanks for the suggestion. Two things came up from this...
1) The splash screen displays fine it is the actual game screens that do not come up properly.
2) Once the files are associated with Stars! 2.70j and I double click on them Stars! still only takes me to the splash screen and does not open the files? Strange.

Thanks anyways. I guess I will just continue to maximise the window everytime I start Stars!

Perhaps, if problem is only with Stars.exe and not other programs then maybe you have a problem with the stars.ini file in the windows directory? Doesn't that file remember the size/layout of your game screens also? You could rename it to something else like starsxxx.ini or something. Then run Stars and it will create a clean one. But you have to enter your serial number when it does this. You can always delete the new one and rename the old one back to stars.ini again.

The m# file that is associated with Stars is in a different directory where the game files are? If so it should run the game and not the splash screen, I would think. I always put each game and its files in a separate directory to make it easier to keep track of files later.

Perhaps your shortcut has the 'run minimized' property set? Right-click on the icon and choose 'Properties'. As I recall, the options are different in different versions of Windows, but in XP it is a drop-down listbox under the 'Shortcut' tab. There are three options, Normal Window, Minimized, and Maximized.

Try deleting your stars.ini

Stars will create a new one automatically...of course you'll have to set the layout etc again..and stick in your code...and don't forget to add newreports=1 etc to the ini file.

I renamed my stars.ini and it reset the window position & size.

I've only seen that happening when the .m file is not in the same directory as the .xy file,

I always have all of the game files for any game that I am involved in saved in the same directory. I also only have one game per directory.

Now that I have reset the .ini file it seems to be working okay. When I double click on the .m file it now jumps straight into the game.

Thanks for the help.
