The Stars!wiki is up and ready for editing to all and sundry at http://wiki.gible.net/

You'll need to create an account before you can edit or create pages. Please use the same username that you use here at HWF.

Top of my list of things to add to the wiki are:
* Pages to define/explain the wiki structure(aka help page)
* The whole of Stars! FAQ (updated where appropriate of course)
* The whole of the help file.
* Zipped mirrors of now-offline Stars! websites
* Other sundry Stars! stuff
* Sections(namspaces?) for related programs (eg freestars) (after I learn how to run those aspects of the wiki...might try to do the same thing for the helpfile/article library if I can make it work nicely)

FYI the wiki is down atm coz its been moved to a new IP address and I've *ahem* forgotten the password to the DNS records.

One of the things I've wanted to include in the wiki is some sort or categorisational entrance (alongside the FAQ/search etc entrances)...ala Portals at Wikipedia or the Synopsis of Categories at the front of good thesauruses(well...mine)...and also to provide a structured organisation of the wiki. You can see the beginings of this in the Main Entry Points wotsit on the main page and this old version of the main page, but its never really come together. I thought, due to my colossal lack of organisational skills, but after doing a bit of research 1 2 3, I realise that its not just me(for once).

So...

I'd like some suggestions from ya'll of possible (crossbranched?) tree-structured categ-organisations for Stars! & Stars! related things (aka the stuff in the wiki).

A heads up that the wiki should be going offline sometime on Monday (NZ time) and will be unavailable until the rehosting process is complete.

As this involves (at least) a new internet connection, a new machine, a new OS and a new management system, it may take awhile. I'll probably take the opportunity to upgrade the wiki software also.

Question: have you ever considered to create a downloadable version which someone could use to access the most important pages of the wiki when they are offline? Or when the wiki itself is online...

As far as I know, I'm fine. Yanni is just moving. He has periodically tried to change the way he does his hosting in the past. This time he might actually change something.

Space/bandwidth I'm not sure... My total is ~1.5GB apparently. Amazing how much you can get to in small pieces. The wiki last backup November comes to ~ 175MB which includes the wiki 'program', images etc, downloadable files and a database dump.

Only fleetingly...I'd sooner set up a mirror somewhere. If you want to keep some pages offline you can always save them. How'd you think I managed to have so many website archives

If you're running Firefox, there's a nice add-on called Scrapbook which lets you archive the whole site, preserving the structure and links. You'll need a little space on your HD though...

I favour HTTrack myself but then I've never been a Firefox user (Chrome now.)


In other news...as a handful of people have already discovered, Stars!wiki is back up and running on its new box and home

As always...genuine editors are especially welcome.

Just to let you know Gible... I considered becoming a French translator for the Wiki for a while now... I simply need the time.

Right now, playing my first few games and writting my Abandonia review gets top priority... But maybe I'll be able to get back to you about this late February?

I'm not sure...I couldn't decide whether I wanted it for a toast or recovery from a heart attack. The wiki hasn't had an other(ie not me) serious editor since Staz stopped editing when the bulk of copying Stars! FAQ was finished(Most of the pages linked to from the Stars! FAQ 'index' page are his work as are most of the many 'little' pages).

But absolutely more editing is always good.

I'd like so see some of the more knowledgeable/skilled people getting into it - for all that I'm reasonably good at researching/testing it takes ages - hence why I've stuck to the utilities/article library etc where Stars knowledge isn't as much a prerequisite.

Other languages I can't do at all, so if people want it, they'll have to build it. The languages I've called for editors for on the main page are just the ones I know there is an audience for. Hell...we even get the odd german thread here at HWF.
