I'd say cruisers.

DD's are nice but the lack of sheilds will kill you once Jihads come about.

FF's are fantastic!!!! But the low base armour will kill you.

BB's would be wonderful... but by 2450... you'd be lucky to have them... even luckier to have reasonable tech.

Cruisers are reasonable to have. Some jihad cruisers and Bazooka cruisers would make up a formidable fleet.

I would say CC as well, since BB should still be far away in a Tiny Sparse (economic limitation). CC is the first hull which allows you some customization possibilities and quite good counter designing. And it's far superior to DD or FF if you have RS as a LRT. They can gate, although it's not so important in a Tiny, but still vital if you are defending with your reserve army.

My 2 cents,

YucaF

Option 5- Battlecruisers. Smile

If not WM, I can generally get my first kill with destroyers/frigates and second with cruisers.

A tiny sparse should be totally conquered by 2440 imo Twisted Evil

2440 would be impossible!

There's too many planets to bomb in relation to how many planets you own, especially considering the game doesn't have accelerated start.

It'd take a PP to conquer by 2440 because it's the only race that can slow or even stop another enemy's growth from turn 1 or 2. I suppose WM would come next but it'd have to be a quick victory.

I'd say 2460 or 2470 is reason able to expect.

I would think most of the serious fighting would start once 2 or 3 ranges are well established with at least Jihad Cruisers. Or maybe I'll be totally wrong. But it'd be too slow and resource intensive to bomb other HWs with less than M80s IMHO - and anything more than tech 12 is too resource demanding.

Only my my 2 cents !

Alex.

That's what I'm thinking. The wasted resources and minerals in the early period trying to establish some form of control could be better spent researching that much needed slight edge. I'd rather take some time until I get range 3 beamers at least with some reasonable bombs.

If you ask me (and you probably wont so I'll tell you anyway)

IS and WM are probably the two races that will be able to take control of enemy worlds easiest. All it'll take is a fair few people (easy with space breeding of IS and the 1.65 attack value for WM pop-dropping) and a load of LBU's.

Note to self... if I'm gonna lose my HW then upload ALL my minerals to the attacking fleet... make sure that they get shafted for taking my world!! lol.

yeah, I found that a fast growing WM with lots of facs and mines seem to be unstoppable even without mines and better planetary defenses and even more so when that race gets BC's, once that happens, beware.

All joking aside I have to disagree here, this is cheating, the host does not have to specificly disallow it, if he wants that people are free to use it he has to specificly allow it ...
It's just a bug abuse and it's nothing more than normal that it is disallowed, if a host has to really write down all things down that are not allowed than game posts would be so long that nobody would read them at all ... There is such a thing as common sense ...

mch

Thats why most people link to starsFAQ and point out "everything but chaff is cheating" or something to similar effect.

There have been games in which certain bugs are allowed (e.g. the starbase bug, fleet dodge, etc...)

From what I've seen lists of whats not allowed tends to actually be a very short list of what IS allowed!!

Correct, but the problem is that the Stars!FAQ list does not hold all bugs! Last time I checked it didn't had the bug listed that you mentioned ... Crying or Very Sad while it is around a long time already ...

True, you can list what is allowed but there are lots of other cheats around that are not listed (and some are not really program related), like players joining a game controlling two races, it's part of the ... what's the word ... "etiquette"? to not do this, but there are people who say: "hey, the host did not disallow that! So it's fair!" <sigh> Crying or Very Sad

You're right.

Thats why I'm really glad to see the bug list on here!!

I'd like to see games listing on here linking to that thread rather than the stars FAQ Very Happy

It's true... etiquette is important!!

I think the easiest thing to do for hosting / hosts would be to breakdown bugs and cheats as seperate entities.

Cheats would be disallowed automatically unless stated specifically (cheats like the N/S E/W minefields, uploading minerals, starbase cheat, hex cheats, memory cheats etc...)

Bugs would be allowed unless stated (chaff, fleet dodge, etc...)

As far as duel races etc... This would ONLY be allowed if the host specifically allows it.

But then again... there's lots of bugs.

Euhm, last tiny sparse I played ended in 2453 and all had fleets of BBs flying around ...
But probably not much of a reference since it where only 4 players and for all it was our first time in this kind of setup ...

Wow, Everybody BBs flying around in a tiny sparce universe at 2453 is quite a feat since most players would only have a couple of planets. Having only four players would help that but since there is only 24 planets in the galaxy, everybody having BBs is still quite good. Was everybody -f or tri-immune HE or was there anything else that would help everybody research to const-13 with so few resources? I'd like to know for future reference because I did not get to BBs in my tiny sparce game. I admit one data point does not serve very well to comprehensively understand tiny sparce universes Smile

All OWW, they have enough resources to get the techs below 14, don't bother researching the higher tech levels, those start to get too expensive for a OWW economy,

Ah, a OWW. I should have thought of that. I played in a OWW once and completey forgot about it. I guess in a tiny sparce, alot of people might try a one planet strategy.

Uhm not completely true, the ever experimenting Woodyman decided to try an OWW AR race! Shocked And he did in fact colonize more worlds (because of the whole AR economy thing into which I will not devigate), but then the mean big bad WM came along and that's how that story ended ... Grin
