Game Parameters
I’m willing to modify the following parameters somewhat if at least half of the players want to, but this is more or less what I’m looking forward to:

Game version:
JRC3 or JRC4 registered version
.
Number of players: 4 minimum, hopefully 16. Game will start if there are at least 4 players two weeks from now. It will start earlier if all 16 show up. If there are any unfilled slots I’ll put some random/random AI’s in.
Host is playing: Yes. If you have questions, comments, etc you can PM me, or email me at richfactor <at> hotmail <dot> com
Played on Autohost:
Yes.
Ranked Game: Yes. Please include in your initial post here what your present rank is. If you don't have a rank, you can arbitrarily decide to be either Beginner or Lower Intermediate.
Player skill level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert—all skill levels.
Universe: Medium/Packed.
Player Positions: Distant.
Options: Public player scores, ABBS, galaxy clumping checked; no others checked.
Races: Any race. I'm also holding a vote further down the thread (post 16) on whether or not to restrict CA. If you would like to play you may want to vote there.
Player Relations: I’d like to see a game with lots of alliances. No pre-game alliances though.
Cheats: Split fleet dodge, chaff, and ISB trumps IT gate scanning allowed (ISB players can build any gates they like). No other cheats allowed. Blatant cheating will result in removal from game. Players are responsible for knowing the cheats and not using them.
Victory: “Owns 65% of planets” and “At least 80 years must pass before a winner is declared” are the only victory conditions set in game. Anyone who can do that is the winner, but otherwise, any unopposed alliance or single player can win the game after 2480.

Generation: One generation every 24 hours, faster if all the players submit. No turn regens and no delays unless at least half the players ask for one. I want to keep the game going pretty fast.
Inactives: Players will be set to inactive after they have missed two turns. If you’ve missed six turns I’ll start looking for a replacement.
Game Start: Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Please PM your races files to Micha by Monday so he can check them, and then I'll start the game on Tuesday.
Replacements/Dropouts: The reason I’m calling this game “Hardheads” is because I’m really hoping for players who want to stick it out. Ask yourself a question. Let’s say it’s 2420, 2430, and a nearby PP race smashes half your worlds with packets. Or maybe you launch a major attack with the your huge battle fleet, and in a single, devastating move it gets all blown up by a ship design you didn’t prepare for—or any of a number of other things. Are you willing to hold out? I’m interested in getting players who will keep fighting. As they say, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

I myself had to drop out of a game last year because of some personal issues—that’s not what I’m talking about. I’ve played numerous games of chess or checkers where my opponent simply stopped playing because I was winning. I’m really hoping for fairly tough “Hardheads” in this game who will keep playing even if their situation doesn’t look good. You can still make a difference in the game even if you don’t win personally. And amazing comebacks aren’t unheard of either. If you do find your race in a predicament, if you get hit with an early setback, if your fleet gets decimated, try looking for another way out, other than dropping out. For instance, look on Autohost, Stars! Faq and other places for tips on strategy, etc.

If you do need to drop out of the game though, please find a replacement if you possibly can. You can start a thread here and ask for a replacement. Along this line, make sure you put a password on your race file when you go to create your race, as well as on your turn files.

NOTE: Many players use the same password for all their files. In case you drop out, you may want to use a “throwaway” password for this game that you wouldn’t be afraid to give a replacement player. Just make sure you write it down.

Remember, even though your race might be on the brink of extinction, there are players out there who thrive on that sort of a challenge—resuscitating a dying race into a living, breathing, zombie, at the very least (well, maybe growling more than breathing—but you get the idea). Explain your race’s situation in your post, and maybe someone will want to take it over. If you can bring it back from the dead yourself, even better.

Files: Micha has agreed to be a third party for this game, to check the turn files for cheats and make sure all the race files have passwords. Please PM him with your .r files ahead of time and keep him updated in case you change your password. Once the game begins please also send him your .x files every year, and your .h files every five years, which should help in the event of dropouts.

Finally, craebild has offered to create a movie of the universe with Xtreme Borders after the game has ended. Micha is going to set up some attachment filters, so the process should be relatively painless. Smile

FOR NEW PLAYERS: The Autohost has information on submitting your turns and such here. Also, here's information straight from the Stars! help file on multiplayer games:

Quote:

Multi-player Games Only

(Optional) Before the host creates a game, use Stars! Custom Race wizard to create a customized race, then give the race file to the host.

Once the host creates the game, do the following on the machine where you'll play:

1. Obtain the gamename.xy and gamename.mN files, where gamename is the name entered by the host in the File Save dialog and N is your player
number; for example, nonstop.m1.
Hot Seat play these files will already be in the game directory shared by all players.
Network play -- just access the shared play directory (sharepoint) set up by the host.
Modem/Email play -- obtain these files from the host and place them in an arbitrary playing directory you've created on your own system.

2. Place your game files in the same directory each turn. The directory location is your choice--we recommend creating a play directory within the
Stars! directory to keep things simple.

3. Start Stars! and click on Open Game from the opening screen. Open your player file, gamename.mN.
Your game begins, with your home world displayed on the screen and in the Command, Scanner and Selection Summary panes. For the first turn,
the Message pane contains tips that help you get started. Investigate your home planet, start basic production and research, and send your
scouts out to learn about the nearby worlds.
If you've never played Stars! before, we recommend you play the tutorial game first to learn basic strategies and to familiarize yourself with all the
player tools.

4. Network/Hot Seat players -- Once you finish the turn, select the menu command Turn (Wait for New). Stars! will minimize, waiting for a new
turn. When the new turn is ready, it will beep once and flash, while displaying "Turn available".
Modem/Email players -- Select File (Save and Submit), then File (Exit). Or, if you're trading turns quickly or leave your computer on for long
periods of time, you can also use Turn (Wait for New)--a much simpler scenario.

All players -- If you wish, you can exit the game before or after you finish the turn. You can save your changes or start the turn again if you don't
like the way things are going. Read Exiting Stars! for more information.

5. If you are playing over a modem or email, upload or email only your log file, gamename.xN file to the host system.

6. If you plan to be absent for a turn or more, follow the instructions in Being Absent from Play.

Thanks all.

Time to find out who’s got the hardest head!

January 14 EDIT: Game is now ranked. Also made clarifications on races and # of players, introduced Micha as our third party to send files to, created a player list, gave information for new players for how to play Stars! multiplayer, and cleaned up the formatting.

January 19 EDIT: Post changes in red. Updated player list and added information on the files.

January 20 EDIT: Post changes in green. Updated player list, removed instructions on .pla files, and added bit about keeping Micha updated on password changes.

January 21 EDIT: Added my email and updated player list.

January 23 EDIT: Some new formatting, updated player list, and spelling correction.

January 24 EDIT: Solidified starting date and updated player list.

Iconian, I'd be happy to receive and check race files, with periodic checking of the players turns for cheats. I'll keep backups of all .m files so as long as players inform me when they change their PW the .h file can always be rebuild. Nevertheless gathering all .h files every 5 years or so might be a good thing ... Not really a need for .x or .p files.

Regards,
mch

Wow, that sounds great Micha! I figured some people might want to join in the game, but I didn't think someone would volunteer to do all the checking and stuff so quickly.

I actually mentioned the .x's and .p's because of the sticky I found for new hosts:

Quote:

If the host is playing have all the players in the game submit their race files and race file passwords to a neutral third party This makes it much easier to find replacements later in the game. (you might also want to have all the players submit their .h, .x, and .p files at intervals so that replacement players are not starting out with no information).

Now that I think about it, the .x's are just turn files, the players are going to send those out all the time. What's a .p file though?

Now all I have to do is get some players! Very Happy

Players should be coming along, too. I think I would like to play, for example Smile

I will need to create a race first, though, and in that connection there are two details in your descripton I would like clarified.

1. You are not noting that CA's are banned or restricted. Does that mean that CA's are allowed without restrictions ? Usually, CA's are banned or severely restricted except in team games, and JoAT's tend to have restrictions, too.

2. You note number of players as 4-16 in a medium packed universe. It makes a lot of a difference whether there are 4 or 16 players, so which is it ? You mention putting AI players in to fill out the universe, but IMO that is a bad idea, as they cannot be influenced by diplomacy, and if they are expert AI's then they start out stronger than any player, while they are weaker than any competent player in the late game.

As far as being a "hardhead" goes, I will not stop playing unless I loose all planets and all ships, and by that time it is the game itself that stops me from submitting turns.

To answer the question about file types, the .p# files are text files listing all known planet statistics, and they can be generated by anyone who has the complete .h# file and the most recent .m# file. The .h# file list past information, and can be generated by opening each year's .m$ file in sequence and saving the game - A boring process if that has to be done for many years of turns, so having each player send their .h# file to a neutral party at intervals does not sound like a bad idea. The .x# files only list the orders for the turn, and since those orders are carried out in the following year's .m# file (and reflected in the .h# file after that) they are not neccessary for a replacement player.

As an experiment, could all players in this game be required to create and save a .p# for each year, and then send all the .p# files to someone who will then create an animation showing the progress of the races during the game ? It only requires a few seconds of work each turn to create the .p# file and back it up, and it does not take much longer to send the files once the game is over. It will take some time to create the animation, using Xtreme Borders to create a BMP og the situation for each year, and then combining those BMPs into an animation, but I could do that - And it should not matter that I am a player in the game, since that would not happen before the game ends.

I'm currently only playing 2 and one is going to be over very soon. Anything I'm hosting doesn't count.

I agreed to play in Babylon 5 - but I don't know that it is going to ever start.

I expect the game will start up this coming week, or the following one. After all, there is a deadline on races of the 15th (my own should be in on the 14th - slow tech and no cheap techs is difficult for me to design for).

I've changed the original post quite a bit, to clarify some things: Game is now ranked. Also made clarifications on races and # of players, introduced Micha as our third party to send files to, created a player list, and gave information for new players for how to play Stars! multiplayer.

So yes, all races are OK, which is why I'm looking for players with hard heads. Smile

craebild: Yes, the CA's are in. Originally I was going to limit it to two CA's, but I'm hoping that won't be necessary. In the Antiballistics game Altruist allowed all PRT's, and look who joined:

Quote:

m1: Vikings (JOAT), played by Per
m2: Altruists (IT), played by Altruist
m3: Traders Reich (HE), played by ccmaster
m4: Xeelee (HE?), played by Matt/mlaub
m5: Phoenyx (IS), played by Shadow Whist
m6: Fluffy Monsters (WM), played by Evaron
m7: Thomids (WM), played by Eric
m8: Kudzu (HE), played by Charles
m9: Arb (JOAT), played by wchart

Not one CA, though he did ask that experts avoid CA's and JOAT's.

Regarding AI's, I plan on having 6 if there are 4-6 humans, 4 if there are 7-10, and 2 if there are 11-12. Expert AI's do start with more strength than humans, but statistically I doubt we'll see more than 2 of those at the most. We can kind of look at them as a little bit of resistance to contend with before dealing with the real threats. As you said they can't be influenced through diplomacy, so we can just consider them to be players taking the "War Monger" approach. They're not usually much trouble from what I've seen, but I would bet they'd make a good excuse for early alliances. However, if enough people decide that they don't want to see AI's, I could take them out.

Glad to hear that you're fellow hardhead. Smile

The Xtreme Borders movie sounds like a good idea. A while ago I got Stars! Notebook and used it in conjunction with .pla files and .map files, going to "Reports" and "Dump Text to File." Is this what you're talking about?

Marduk and Steve: Are either of you interested in joining this game? I'm still looking for more players--right now we're up to three Very Happy but I think we'll probably get a lot more before it starts.

This is not a good game to use as an example. The HE's that ccmaster and Charles played are of the hyper-hyper -f sort. That type of race is actually more deadly than a normal TT CA in this sort of universe (Small). It is probably better than a -f CA, too, for a while. Although, if the -f CA player is a good player, the edge will go to the CA very quickly.

One player in AB was a bit peaved that -f HE races were used at all, given the text of the rules, and would have liked to go back to the start and use his favorite -f CA.

I played my favorite old school 4% HE on a lark. I too would have played a different race, or never joined the game, if I had known that -f HE's would be played. Especially if I'd have known both were going to abandon the game so early, which effectively made it impossible for my 4% to compete.

In a packed medium, I'll pick the CA as the winner every time. Probably won't need an ally, either. You should think hard about allowing CA's without handicaps.

CA's: Should we restrict them at all? (players only please)[ 8 votes ]
1. Do not restrict CA's in ANY form 5 / 63%
2. Impose AT LEAST one restriction on CA's 3 / 38%

Quote:

Hmm. Quite a while before posting I thought this over quite a bit. I considered banning CA's entirely, or limiting it to only 2 CA's for the game, or making sure they had 100 unused RW points, or restricting them from TT. The truth is, I really don't like the idea of limiting any races like that. Personally, I would much rather see other players join up and form strong alliances against the CA's than restricting them in any way. I know that a pretty good CA can make 100k by 2450 (though I think that was in a testbed), better if it's used by an expert, and that would certainly be pretty intimidating to the other players in a game like this, even if they do all have hard heads. Shocked

If more than one race is CA we can expect to see a good fight between them at least, but the others might not have nearly so good a chance. Embarassed I certainly don't want everyone in the game to be CA, or even half of them.

I think I'll leave this one up to the players again and create a poll. If at least half the players want it, I'll restrict the CA's in some way. I'd just rather not go back and change more on the game description though, especially since Micha didn't agree to check the .r files for restrictions.

craebild: I just realized looking at your first post that you didn't actually say you would play, so I may have added you to the list a little hastily. Just reply back about if you decide for sure you want to play.

All players please PM me with your email addresses. Ron says I'll need them for the Autohost. Since this is a ranked game, please indicate your present rank in your opening post here. If you don't have a rank, you can either select Beginner or Lower Intermediate.

I will be playing in this game, it is unlikely I will be spending too much time in "The End" to prevent me from plaing effectively in this game.

I will find a replacement for the game I leave before leaving either game, in the unlikely situation that I have to leave one of the games.

I still have to make a race for this game, though, but I do not think that will take that long.

PS: What do others have to say, what rank should I have ?

I have no idea what's the ranking system here, is it based on the rank I see here on this forum under my name? Confused2

It has nothing to do with your forum ranking. You can find more info in the Ranking forum.

ok count me in I send my race as soon as I have made one.

A friendly tip: don't join too many games. You seem to fairly new to playing vs humans, you must know that turns become more complicated and will take more time than playing vs the AI ... (of course you can be student with loads of free time <g> when I was in that situation I once had 5 running games ...) With humans there is also diplomacy involved and you might find yourself spending more time on writing mails, discussing plans etc then on actually playing your turn. Wink

Alright, let's see where we are now.

I've updated the original post with information on the .pla files for Xtreme Borders. If anyone notices any problems there please inform me, as I haven't used Xtreme Borders much and I'm not 100% sure that a .p file is a .pla file.

Right now we have myself, Ptolemy, craebild, and Neo the White playing--good to have you all on board! All of you will need to PM me with your email addresses prior to the game's start. In that regard, I'm going to ask Ron to be put on a waiting list today, and that will give me until AT LEAST Saturday the 27th to get all the files in to Ron, which is right about the time the game should start.

In addition to what we have now, Dogthinkers and m.a@stars are also considering joining, and I'm still interested in getting more players. If you would like to play this game you can go ahead and reply here with your current rank and I'll add you to the player list.

If you're going to play, also remember to vote in the earlier poll on whether or not we should restrict CA's at all. Right now it looks as though we'll end up restricting CA's, but that trend may not hold. I'll need to have it resolved soon though, since if we want to restrict CA's I'll need to check with Micha to see if he'd be willing to look at the .r's for that.

If you're not interested in this game yourself but you know someone who might be interested , you could drop them an email or a PM to tell them about it.

And for now, I think that's just about it. Hopefully no one overloads themselves too much by taking on too many games at once. Good luck everyone!

Yeah, bread too.

.p file = .pla file
However before creating .p files you should open your stars.ini and under [Misc] add the line "NewReports=1".
More data is added in the .p file and that file will get the player number added, IOW if you dump planet information without the NewReports the text file is called "gamename.pla", with the NewReports it's called "gamename.p#", where # is the player number.

I'd be willing to. Smile It's just a minor check.

Files: Micha has agreed to be a third party for this game, to check the turn files for cheats and make sure all the race files have passwords. Please PM him with your .r files ahead of time. Once the game begins please also send him your .x files every year, and your .h files every five years, which should help in the event of dropouts.

No need for .x files, the .h file is the only important file. Also please keep me updated on PW changes.

Finally, craebild has offered to create a movie of the universe with Xtreme Borders after the game has ended. In order for this to work, each player will need to create a .pla file ever year. While you're in Stars! go to Reports> Dump To Text File> Planet Information. This will create file in the Stars! directory with a .pla extension. Then rename the file to the year you made it and put it in a folder with the other .pla's.

The simplest way to do this is probably to create a new folder in your Stars! folder when the game begins. Name the folder "Hardheads." Let's say you've just created your .pla for 2400. You would find it in the Stars! folder and rename it to "2400.pla." Then put it into the "Hardheads folder." Then do the same thing for every year after that--2401, 2402, etc.

I can make that even more simple. Wink I will set up the page so that I receive *all* .m files of every year (this to have a backup), I will setup some filters that save the attachements into a folder with the year as name. When the game is over I will run a batch file that dumps the .p file of each race for every year (need the race PWs for that). I'll zip these .p files and sent them of to craebild.
Making the movie year per year in Xtreme Borders is the real work, and I'll be happy to leave that upto him. Wink

That's what I did to create the animated gif in this post. (note that it's not a screenshot of *every* year, intervals are larger)
