Stars! Official Strategy Guide - uptodate links to other sites |

I've noticed that an awful many old great Stars!-websites aren't available anymore. It has even become difficult to find such fundamental works like the Stars! Official Strategy Guide. And on http://www.starsfaq.com/ the link to the Guide is broken, too.
Thus I have created a site from where it can be viewed online or downloaded for cozy offline reading:
http://stars.arglos.net/
Or to go directly for the Stars! Official Strategy Guide:
online: http://stars.arglos.net/articles/ssg/ssg.htm
zipped: http://stars.arglos.net/download/ssg.zip (as ssg.zip, 1314 kb)
I can guarantee that the link will be valid for several years and if the mods or admin want to include it to the link listings of ah or wherever you feel it convenient, feel free to do so. And if one is indeed updating the list of links on http://starsautohost.org/epsilon42.htm, well, what about updating all the other links as well? Most aren't existing anymore, others have changed. While all this links are already on my site above, ah would be a much better place. Alternatively we could make a sticky thread for uptodate links. My suggestion would be the following:
Stars-R-Us Article Database: still the best collection of Stars! strat&tact articles
http://www.starsfaq.com/articles/stars-r-us_article.htm
The Stars! FAQ: Home of FAQs and a huge collection of articles. A must to read
http://www.starsfaq.com/
rec.games.computer.stars: The old and still alive Usenet group, now hosted at Google.
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.computer.stars
The Stars! Directory: The directory of Stars! websites (not updated since years)
http://aaedesigns.com/stars/
Small Collection of Strat & Tact, among other things: the Stars! Official Strategy Guide
http://stars.arglos.net/
Stars! Strategist: home of the Strategist mapping tool
http://www.stars-strategist.com
Pirates Retreat: home of the Xtreme Borders mapping tool
http://www.pirates.retreat.btinternet.co.uk/indexpr.htm
Lots of player tools, Stars!-versions and patches on autohost itself:
http://starsautohost.org/kn2050.htm
Finally new serial codes are given out and hopefully this leads to some new players... who need to get a grip on the game and we should offer them to make use of the great wealth of information the Stars!-community has collected in the past. For getting a serial number to play Stars!, see: http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=115 8&rid=1&S=61fac869d52c83dced0186aa5dfbe475&pl_vi ew=&start=0#msg_29817
{mod edit: made this a sticky}

Micha wrote on Tue, 07 November 2006 09:05 | I was thinking of dividing them in categories:
- online and updated
- online, no longer updated
- dead
I was also planning to include links to the online utilities that Wumpus made, like his race checker and arbitrary tech testbed ...
craebild's hab calculator ...
(the links to these are spread all over the Academy/Bar, no easy reference)

Well, still enough work to do...
I wouldn't really differ between "updated" and "no longer updated", most likely new players will interprete it as "important" and "skip it". But some stuff like the Strategy Guide or the Stars-R-Us Article Database can be called almost ancient, isn't updated anylonger and still I would rate them as the most superb articles written about Stars!.
A small comment might be necessary here and there like for the Stars Directory, though.
Perhaps it would be better to sort sites by:
- General
- Strat & Tact
- Tools
- Games (no sites in English besides ah but I think there might be some Polish, Russian, French...)
On a sidenote:
If people have problems finding a place or have only temporary/wacky webspace for their articles or whatever about Stars!, feel free to contact me and I'll upload it on my site. Same if you plan to give up your Stars!-related Domain and you want to transfere some treasures into safety to keep them availabe for the community.

... right, "no longer updated" indeed doesn't mean they can be skipped!

Some sites cover "all the above".

I'm curious to know how many sites have a mirror of the Official Strategy Guide. More than a few I suspect.

Old Stars!-version: Stars 2.0b (mining fuel) |
Sun, 21 December 2008 05:06 |

For nerds and those who want to play around with an old version of Stars! in which it was still needed to mine fuel, there are also some neat weird area weapons:
* Stars 2.0b (1.330 kb)
(by courtesy of mlaub who still had the old version)
It's the shareware version limited to tech 10. Just unzip it in an own directory and it comes with an own help-file.

I'll rummage around my old hard drives. I could have sworn I had the original files for the purchased version. IIRC it shipped on disk, which has long since decayed.

Cripes! am I a dunce sometimes. I wondered why I had 2 zips of 2.0b...
I renamed both, and am sending the registered version to Altruist, so he can post it.
****BE very careful with the registered version. It includes a exe to convert your files to the registered version!****
Read the docs, cause I don't remember the implications. I can fire up the standalone stars exe with the converter, so it may not be needed.

No need to be careful, the "weird" exe you are probably refering to, is just the usual selfextracting file which unpacks into Stars, hlp and several txt-files.

Both versions, shareware and registered are uploaded now, see:

(by courtesy of mlaub who still had the old version)
(to keep this thread clean: my above 1st post about 2.0b can be deleted)
