Hi everyone,

I'm a total newbie and am looking for the srtategy guide that some web sites mention. The official link to it is broken. Does anyone know where I might be able to find it?

Fortunately, the guide was made available for download as a zip, so I'm sure that there are a number of people who have a copy of it. I've posted my copy of the original at:

http://www.code65536.org/stars/ssgfrm.zip

Read the readme.

If you are a total newbie - try running a few testbeds with a couple of races to get a feel for how things work.
Its really worth trying to get to a stage where you can achieve 25K by 2450 before you launch yourself into a game. The few hours spent will mean that you dont get totally stomped in your first game and never play again (we need every new player)

This link will show you how to do this with a reasonable JOAT
http://www.starsfaq.com/articles/sru/art99.htm

If you dont like that style of play - look for some of the factoryless races in the race areas on this site.
Being -f means you are faster and will get all the fun of stomping on a few people (before the quiet monster in the corner wakes up a stomps you if your games go anything like mine Laughing )

Um, well, yeah, why not. Wink

But 1st you should try to achieve it when playing alone in a tiny/small universe. Very Happy

Once you understand econ in the ideal case and econ under pressure, you can try non-pure-econ-based approaches, too. Nod

If you're just starting out, 25k at any level is a good target. Its always *with* Accelerated BBS Play tho.

No – I didn’t mean on the hardest level. I actually meant with no enemies at all. Embarassed
That way you don’t have to worry about protecting your empire just about fine tuning your economy. Cheers
Basic model is
Wait till homeworld is at 25% pop – export each turn all pop so that HW stays at 25%, send it to the best world in 2 years travel (try to send to somewhere within 1 if poss – but a 90% at 2 years is better than a 60% at one).
When this one is at 22% you should be sending elsewhere and as it hits 25% you should be exporting pop from there as well.
Keep doing this until all planets that are over 60% hab value have 25% pop levels.
Then start filling your lower % hab planets – you can fill these to 100%, it is also worth colonising yellows (up to about –5).
While you are doing this all of your resources should be going on making factories and mines (in that order!) only build ships if you need them (don’t research anything except const4 for privateers).

Once a world has built all the factories (and mines) it can at 25% hold it should build ships and export Germ as well as pop (and stop building factories and mines).

Sometime in the 40s you should start running out of places to stick your pop – at this point you can let the throttle off, let everywhere grow don’t bother exporting pop and let everywhere build factories. The only movement you should do in this time is moving Germ from places you have loads to places you have none.

This is described better elsewhere by others – but follow this model and you should get good economy.
Once you have 25K by 2450 try it with 3-4expert AI, once you are at the stage that you feel they are not interfering with your growth too much then try a real game.
(you may want to sign up for a real game while you are learning to pound AIs as you will find humans play differently)

There is a beginners-only game that I think is going to be started soon and there might still be time to sign up. It's in the new game announcements forum...

Thanks for all these replies.

I have really valued the inclusiveness of the site.

Of course though the big problem for starting a game with real people is having a reial number. I use the one that was posted here! I emailed empire and they were adamant that they are not going to release any more serial numbers. I just wondered if it is ok to use that serial number (obviously I would have to let all the players know before hand. And this problem ain't going to go away!

Serial numbers now available by contacting Ron:

http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=115 8

If you do want to join the beginners game (Hex I) starting up, there are only two spaces left. If you miss that, there are occasional new games starting up anyway, so you probably wouldn't have to wait _that_ long.
