Powerful CA vs sneaky SS.....
Yes, your choice of race will most likely depend on the game scenario, but you may have a favorite.

I voted for IT as thats obviously my Favoured Race Laughing

When I forst got Stars! earlier on this year I read the strategy guide (While anxiously waiting for the game to arrive) and thought that IT sounded like an excellent race. I liked the idea of stargates and was disappointed (and a bit embarrased Embarassed ) to find everyone else got them!

I've only played IT in the MultiPlayer games, tried other races, but was like, How do you manage not being able to gate population!! Very Happy

I am trying to get round to playing other Races but IT is the one that seems to "fit" at the moment

A lot has changed in my 3 years absence from "Stars!", but at least one thing remains constant: SD is still unpopular. Razz

Hey, I like SD. It's a devastating warrior prt if you know how to use it correctly. The catch is that few players below advanced level know how to use it correctly, and think of it as a "defensive" race that hides behind its mines.
Cheh. Laughing
It is unpopular to have as an enemy....Twisted Evil
I thought about choosing it in the poll, but I like WM, SS, and IT too well.... so I had to pick "depends on the game".

And as a note, I despise CA and kill them on sight. Very Happy

Interesting that in the game I am playing right now, we have 8 players and 3 of them are SD Smile

Yeah, and also 3 IT, a no-show, and a poor AR caught in the middle. How's that for a weird mix? Not a JoaT or CA in the bunch...

Well, there ya go, you pegged me there. Smile
Actually, I tried SD once long ago; I kept blowing up my own ships. Laughing

Think of this as an example:
You keep a few mml scouts zigzagging a year ahead of your attack force. This way your enemy can't rush in to intercept your main force without hitting mines. And you also have a protected resupply route. Not to mention your mines can surround the target worlds making reinforcement very difficult. And your ability to minesweep at warp 6 is a big offensive advantage too.
Now throw some cloaking into the mix...
The advantage of SD is that you slow down enemy movement to the point they're helpless against you.
Newbies: As far as detonations, they happen *after* movement, so you need to anticipate where the enemy will be ahead of time. And remember, many small fields are vastly superior to a few big ones.

It gets better....

People have mentioned the SS tactic of popping cloaked mine layers into enemy territory and laying some mines...

Now imagine popping an SD mine layer into enemy territory - not only can you enter @ warp 6 and thus cover more ground quicker you can escape quicker too. Drop some speed traps and stop their reinforcements, drop heavies to take out mining ships, or just lay the odd detonating minefield and ruin their supply system. Only and IT can avoid falling victim to this... but then if you lay a standard minefield over their minelayers away from home and detonate the field they lose their ability to replace their own mines, keep laying your own and hey presto you've gain some space once you clear out beginner colonies and the remaining mines - handy huh?

SD is solid as a rock. And if you can (doubtful, but maybe) conceal your PRT and you run into enemy space you can drop some mines when they send ships in to intercept and Kablam - they din't see those heavies coming since they were travelling at warp ridiculous.

Hahaha! You guys are so devious, I love it! Thanks for the insight, you two make SD sound like a lot of fun all the sudden. Any new games starting? I wanna play a new prt I've never played before. Laughing

SD can be a lot of fun to play, and against a sharp player, devilishly difficult to defeat. Ken Mitchell is making brilliant use of an SD in Careful Wars (want to post any pointers here, Ken?).

Such praise from a master Surprised
Brilliant - I do not think so. You do not see the messages that say "Your fleet has been destroyed by your exploding mines"
But I do get to see fun messages such as
"Fizzit Flashlight+ #4 has been stopped in your Standard mine field at Space (1416, 1719). Your mines have inflicted 16125 damage points, but you didn't manage to destroy any ships."
To bad I did not kill any ships Twisted Evil

SD is fun but a lot of MM due to the mines.
My first time playing them, but not the last Very Happy
