Hi everybody,

I'm currently doing the new Stars! splash screen for my VML-mod. You can check out sample pictures here (no, the .exe currently downloadable isn't yet updated with one of the pictures):

Feedback and discussion appreciated.

The 3D one is more modern, personally the 'classic' logo of Stars! is something I never really liked. How hard is it to make it available in two flavors that can play with each-other? (does the splash really affect what saves it'll load, I bet not)

Nice one!

But just to avoid any misunderstandings: I'm not a graphics artist. The screenshots on my website show splashscreens of two different not yet published beta .exe files. I did not do the graphics!

The first one is from an artist, whom I already contacted about using it for VML. Results posted here later tonight Wink

The second one is just a partial scan of empires retail package Stars! multiplayer twinpack (came with two codes and two CDs IIRC).

Bryce (because its so beautiful with textures it really is much easier than most programs) Truespace, and sometimes animation master.

I'm more than happy to reveal his reply:

"Hi
thanks for being interested.
If you want to use it, I think it's better to put my name and url there(name: Moin, url: http://phusion9.edesigns.nl/)
So we won't have to deal with copyright problems Very Happy
see ya
moin"

Thanks a lot, Moin. I suggest you visit Moins website, if you like the new Stars! splashscreen for VML-mod. It will look like this:

Very sharp!
If the splashscreen and ship pics can be changed without making the exe incompatible with others, I'm all ears! Very Happy
I have modified my default exe and it's caused no compatibility problems - though it was only switching the ship pics of the dreadnought and minimorph so my machines of death can actually look the part.

Oh, and the UI in v2.6 looks a lot better, the faux 3d edges on everything in v2.7 look tacky IMHO.
If we could change the look of the UI that would be interesting...

Well, you're advertising your graphics work here. Smile
Since Ron has his reasons for not wanting huge graphics on his site, it might be better to use links to your own site for this sort of material. Rolling Eyes

With respect to the other postings here concerning the modifications of the Stars! .exe files and the splashscreens and graphics, I would use extreme caution in this endeavour. There are international copyright laws that govern the distribution and alteration of copyrighted materials both published and unpublished including program codes, graphics, sounds, documentation, any many other aspects of a computer program. Sometimes the ownership is transferred but the copyrights don't usually run out just because the program is 7 or so years old. Rolling Eyes Very Happy

PS your picture has already affected the screen view format on this forum as I now have to scroll left and right to see the entire width of the text posts. The least you could have reduced the size of the pix first. Smile

I think VML is not a copyright problem (well it might violate not changing stuff but). Anyone who can use it must buy Stars! to begin with, as it is a J patch fix no online serial numbers would work. Also Stars! is so old few people would bother putting much money into suing, besides their is no monetary damage done to the company (serial # again) so it'd be hard to sue for much other than making him stop, and that I don't think is worth people's time.

BIN IT, or get another graphics card ( £2 ) and that one CAN!

if its cause u cant READ anything smaller than at 640x480, try Glasses or better yet, increase the text size in explorer to the biggest possible ( here ill help you out! - click View -> Text Size -> Largest, that will help you ALOT

Up your resolution too. Very Happy I do use 800 most of the time and switch to 1024 often when I am running Stars! as it gives me a larger view of the map. My graphics card is just fine thanks. It even does audio/video IO's as well as RF television via cable IO's via RG52 cable. Although when they go solely digital in a couple years and ditch all the analog signals, I will have to upgrade graphics card for sure, as my RF port will be useless except for old vcr's and other older analog sources.
I can read perfectly on my monitor as I am near sighted, thank you. So I will save my glasses for driving, mostly. Thanks for the help with IE. Sure coulda' used your help when I was repairing Commodores, Amigas and Atari ST's back in the 80's. Smile

The problem you are missing here is that a window such as HWForum uses also has borders and menus, headings, etc. So an 800x600 screen will not hold an 800x600 picture in addition to these borders, etc. without running out of room. Therefore scrolling is required, as the oversized picture has managed to change the format of the entire thread, not just the message with the picture in it. Do you understand? Smile

I use 1024x768 all of the time. Its the best thing on my flat screen, since it can only 'emulate' 800x600 and 640x480, it doesn't go below that. And yes, it made me scroll left to right a very small amount on this forum.

Good. I am happy for you. Smile
But the problem was that it affected other computers. And this is a forum that includes many users with many different computer configurations, is it not?
So the general idea is to keep it comfortable for most users by not introducing unnecessary elements. I am sure many users also use telephone connections thereby an additional problem with excess use of graphics as was discussed on this forum a long time ago with respect to the use of avatars and such.
I love graphics. Ron can vouch for that. Very Happy But at this time they are not wanted on this forum. Glad when they are gone and the forum is back to normal. Smile

BTW comments like "WTF, BIN IT, get another graphics card, try glasses", "dinosaur of a computer" and teaching me how to use explorer are not good points to win your argument and are more likely to work against you than for you in this forum. But I could be wrong. Smile

DSL makes me feel so good inside. That picture takes like 4 seconds to download, its a beautiful thing, and my DSL comes with a dial-up service too, if I ever needed to use internet without a DSL setup.

No, Crewman Recruit is the first rank (one stripe). You are currently at Crewman Apprentice, which is the next step up from Crewman Recruit.

Check the FAQ link at the top right of the page for an explanation of how it works. ("What are the military style ranks I see...")

Ok, I've finally arrived from my Retreat!

Err, I don't see what the problem was about that link to that JPG.

The image never showed on my screen, just the link. Click the link, a new window showed with the image.

Or has something now been changed and I'm just behind on the times?
