Ok, I just got the viper mod and took a look at it (why are you looking at me like that?) and what are the purpose of the fighter hulls? they seem worthless.

The viper mod is a modfile using StarsEd to modify the Stars executable.

If you download version 1.2 of StarsEd it will work with both versions 2.6/2.7i and version 2.6/2.7 jrc3. Those are the only versions I have made it work with (though I haven't tried with versions earlier than 'i'). It does not work with 2.6/7 jrc1, 2 or 4.

If you download the viper mod for StarsEd you can import it to apply to a Stars!.exe. Make sure you keep a copy of the original .exe file that you apply the mod to since changes can not be reversed. Do not apply the mod to the .exe file you use to play Stars! with (to be on the safe side). Use a different folder for playing around with modfiles.

Viper sucks. Since it never got beyond alpha, forget about it. You aren't likely to find anyone else using it and besides if I ever finish it your copy will be obsolete anyway.

what about the Vulture MOD? it seems a little bizzare, from what I saw. An intent to help the starbases out but nothing that work from what I saw

If you want to play with a modified version of Stars! I recommend the VML modfile by Verker. This modfile dramatically changes most of the stars components, including things like the orbital fort (which now has a 75kt ship construction facility and provides re-fueling capability). There are new ship graphics, engine parameters have been modified (like free warp of the fuel mizer) and many more changes Razz .

The VML modfile changes so much of Stars! that it requires new strategies and varies the type of gameplay you need to use. Sadly Sad , AH can't support hosting of the games so you need to host it manually (or set up your own web space to host a game).

However, if you want to play with a modfile, this is the one to play with. Here is the link to Verker's site if you want to download a copy.

I would be glad to have a VML duel with anyone interested. It is a lot of fun to develop the new strategies / tactics needed to adapt to the VML game changes.

yeah. Luckily, Verker had a lot more time to devote to testing and balancing than I did. Smile I barely have enough time for my normal games these days.

It should probably be moved to the VML lounge.

I was under the impression that the VML lounge is strictly about discussing Verkers mod and for hosts announcing VML games there. It's not really a section for all mods ...

Of course I could be wrong, and if so than Ron will correct my mistake and put this thread in the right place, I can't do that myself since I'm not a moderator for the VML lounge ...

Given the relative lack of activity in the VML Lounge maybe widening the scope of that forum to discuss StarEd-based mods in general? Or at least mods that intend large-scale changes and re-balancing of the Stars hulls and components.

Said decision being Ron's. But if he okays it I'll see about moving the thread there.

The subtitle to the VML Lounge is "For VML mod-file and StarED discussions."

That's what I based my earlier suggestion on.

You're right about that. I would say that indeed justifies a move ... this thread is about StarED.

Back sort of to the original topic - the main reason IMHO that VML, or any other mods, never caught on quite is because the changes we really want to make can't be done without changing the game engine itself.

Well, Stars! is already an excellent game, and any changes, at best, will only be seen by a few of the people who play it, and not all of those will think that the changes improve the game.

There is little point in fragmenting the existing number of players into smaller groups simply by introducing several versions of the game.

Apart from the obvious bugs (not design issues) I don't think there is a single issue in the game that everyone would agree on.
e.g. I would say that the points that JoaT gets for NAS needs fixing. I would also think that a lot of players would agree, but I bet not everyone would.

I wonder if Verker would want to help with FreeStars! - unless he already is helping, which is possible...

The last mod file version that was made to my knowledge is version 1.3b. I do have the origianl zip and can put it up on a page for download for a short while or I can send the zip by mail.
