It would be very nice to play stars on such a portable device.

Any idea?

Sadly no... There was talk of it a couple of months ago, but that primarily focused on remote desktop apps.

Yeah, but it won't be an android tablet once you do what needs to be done. I will have it setup on a kndle fire soon, but input might be problematic.

It is possible to use an application such as phonemypc from an Android to play the game hosted on your pc. But it is very awkward and uses a lot of data. I played one turn last year while cycling in France but it cost $20 in charges!

Afternote: I didn't actually play the game while on my bike - it was hard enough sitting down in my tent.

There are other remote control apps you can get to access a PC remotely but phonemypc was the one I chose. Entering any text was almost impossible IIRC. You could only control the cursor.

Hey.

Best working alternative for me - as I am hosting a game for 13 players and some of them are constantly travelling - is a virtual machine with VMWare. It can be remotely accessed via VNC or via browser. The browser has to be a fairly new IE and you need the rights to install a plugin.
VNC solution works everywhere with portable clients, which are available as freeware. Ah, host OS is WinXP. Downside to it is, you have to keep a server running 24/7.

Cheers,
fab

Asuming it's a 32-bit version, yes you could. Comes from a man sitting on exact same configuration.

the same applies to a 64 bit machine too.

takes about 700 mb of downloading and 20 mins of installing two programs and a 3gb vm to do the trick.

It's easier than it sounds.

Has anybody looked at the Windows 8 compatability yet? It runs on the new microsoft tablet aswell as PC, so if its compatable we may have just been handed a mobile stars! platform.

If it is 32 bits and has backward compatibility (doubtful), then possible.

If it is 64 bits then it is doubtful at best.

Win8 does run stars. LittleEddie got it working, but there were a few issues.

Yeah. I know some of those issues well.

The thing is, when you run an OS on a tablet it is most likely a light version of said OSes. And the new Windows versions have no backward compatibility unless you purchase a real copy and install them yourself. For a light OS I seriously doubt it come stock with those backward compatibilities.

Would be interested to know those exact issues though. Are they discussed in this thread?

The new Windows 8 desktop version, 32 bit version, runs Stars! without a problem after a few twinks.

I talked about it at http://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=51 14&start=0&rid=1480

I tried using dosbox and it works. Just a question: is there a way to chenge the resolution to fit it better to the device used?

Thanks.

Max.

Microsoft Sets $499 Price for Surface Tablet.

This version will not run Stars!. It's a non-Intell chipset and can't run Windows 3.1 to 7 programs as I understand it. It just runs Windows 8 Apps.

I'm hearing that in Jan-Feb '13 that a full Intell Surface Tablet will be ready, but I haven't been able to find out if it will be a 32 or 64 bit system.

There are decent PC tablets available now, if somewhat expensive. I paid $1100 last December for a dual-core i3 processor, 4GB ram, 64GB SSD, 11.6" touchscreen tablet running Windows 7 (Samsung Series 7 Slate). They were as much as 25% cheaper in the MicroSoft stores at the time, but it wasn't worth the travel. I connect a mouse and keyboard for anything involving significant typing or fine cursor control. Battery life is as low as about 3.5 hours at full brightness while doing something strenuous and keeping the antennas on, and as long as a bit over 7 hours at a low brightness and just reading or something similar.

OK - I've spent £2.29 and got Stars! running on my Nexus7.

Thanks to gible for the pointers....

First of all install "DosBox Turbo" and "DosBox Manager" as linked above (DosBox itself cost £2.29 at the time of writing, the Manager is free)
Then download the http://wiki.starsautohost.org/files/DOSBoxStars.rar and expand to somewhere on your SD card (or emulated storage)
NB - I had to download it to a PC, extract it and zip it for transfer - the rar didn't get expanded properly on the device
Then open DosBox Manager, add a new profile and "Edit Config", "DosBox Settings" (Advanced DosBox configuration), "Autoexec" (Edit autoexec.bat) and put in the following:
mount c: /storage/emulated/0/DOSBox/DOSBoxC
c:
windows\win /n c:\stars\stars.exe -x
exit

where /storage/emulated/0/DOSBox/DOSBoxC is where you have extracted the above rar...

Add your Stars! serial and you're golden.
This is going to revolutionise my ability to keep a game around...

loaded up my current turn in lowtek - I can see the screen being painted, but it's not too bad. I'd like right click support from my USB mouse, and there are things you expect to be able to do (pinch and drag the map) which are obviously not supported...

Overall I'm really impressed - I'll look at getting right click support from my USB mouse, but with that and the bluetooth keyboard the system works well.

This is an old thread - should I put any effort into making it work with recent tablets?

Any experience out there?

iPad will never work, Android does as mentioned above...

I would mention Windows tablets but RT is a lost cause and 8 is a pain to use, but Stars friendly
